Since his inauguration in January, US President Donald Trump has not held back from provoking Canada, threatening to annex it as the 51st state and increasing tariffs by 25%. This led to Canadian fans to boo the US National Anthem at last Saturday’s US-Canada match in Montreal.
When asked if Trump had a wager with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the game’s outcome, White House press secretary Karolina Leavitt responded: “He looks forward to watching the game tonight and we look forward to the United States beating our soon-to-be 51st state, Canada.”
Team USA general manager Bill Guerin, a former NHL All-Star, pleaded with Trump to join him at the TD Garden for Friday’s game. Instead, he hopped on the phone with the team for a few minutes.
“I know he talked to the Team USA hockey team this morning after their morning practice,” Leavitt added.”I also spoke to some folks from that team after and they were jubilant over President Trump’s comments to the team.”
“And to Canada, if you don’t win, the tariffs are going even higher! ” Vance then laughed and said, “No I’m kidding… that’s the president’s decision!”
When asked about his favorite part of the tournament by ESPN reporter Emily Kaplan, the usually reserved McDavid simply said, “Just to see the reaction.”

He admitted: “It’s a quick tournament. It’s not an Olympic medal but it means a lot. I was not very good all night. All that was going through my mind was ‘keep going.'”
On the topic of whether the 4 Nations would attract new fans, McDavid optimistically stated, “”I hope they loved it. It’s a great game, it’s a great sport. You can’t ask for a better show than that.”
