Local is everything
After losing two of its last three matches, the Yorktown High School ice-hockey club team routed Oakton, 11-3, in its final regular-season action.
Oakton put a scare into Yorktown early at Reston SkateQuest, scoring just 15 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 lead.
Yorktown answered quickly on a goal by junior Bennett Haas to tie the match at 1. After Oakton scored to go up 2-1, the Patriots once again responded quickly with a goal from senior Henry Dwyer late in the first period.
Yorktown added four goals in the second period, three from senior Roger Allenbaugh and one from freshman Alex Czelusniak, to take control.
The third period was dominated by Yorktown, with Dwyer adding two more goals and one each from freshman Peyton Dunn, freshman Andrew Olsen and junior Peyton Tien.
There were 14 assists on the Yorktown goals. Tien had three; Allenbaugh, Haas and Will O’Sullivan two each; and Will Schryver, John Chistolini, Logan McGraw and Stewart Bream had one. Yorktown goalie Gunnar Obitts made 19 saves.
Yorktown concluded its regular season with a 7-3 record and earned a first-round bye in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League playoffs.
The top three point scorers for Yorktown are Allenbaugh with 25, Dwyer with 12 and Haas with 10. That same trio led the team in goals: Allenbaugh (16), Dwyer (9) and Haas (4). The leaders in assists are Allenbaugh (9), Haas and Tien (6 each) and Alex Olsen (5).
Goalie Brendan Thompson leads the team with six victories.
