It’s Day 5 of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics with eight gold medals on the line today.
The first went to Switzerland’s Franjo von Allmen, who added Alpine skiing’s super-G to his downhill and team combined titles. U.S. star Ryan Cochran-Siegle repeated his Beijing feat with a fine silver.
Jens Luraas Oftebro (Nordic combined) added a seventh gold to Norway’s Games-leading tally, while the U.S. took both gold and silver via Elizabeth Lemley and Jaelin Kauf in the freestyle women’s moguls. Later, Italian duo Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer took the first-ever gold medal in luge women's doubles, one of the new events at this year's Games.
The men's ice hockey tournament began with a thrilling upset as Slovakia defeated heavyweight Finland 4-1 behind a two goals from Juraj Slafkovský. Sweden will face host-nation Italy a bit later in that major sport.
Men's luge, figure skating, speed skating and the start of the men's curling tournament make up the rest of the schedule today.
Follow along for live coverage, context and analysis from our reporters on the ground in Italy.
We're set for snowboarding halfpipe quals, Part II: now it's the men's turn. Twenty-five riders will compete for 12 spots in Friday night's final under the lights here in Livigno. The Americans have three in the field: Alessandro Barbieri, Chase Josey and Jake Pates.
A hilarious final chapter to the speedskating scuffle… Steve Buckley investigated and it turns out that the disagreement happened because a fan wearing Netherlands orange was getting a little too close to Snoop Dogg, who’s here right now watching from a front-row seat in a section behind the well of photographers. There are no luxury boxes here, so there’s a bit of traffic control happening for those walking in front of Snoop’s aisle.
With some blanks in the first end of the first draw of men's curling round robin, it seems like a good time to go over some of the rule differences between mixed doubles and teams.
As much as mixed doubles curling is riveting, there's something so special about the four-person teams game. So much strategy, much more precise and wow, the elation of working for a quadrennial with your team.
I am so excited for this round robin, and to see the new U.S. rink on Olympic ice, as well as, of course, the foursome from Canada.
FINAL from Milano Santaguilia Ice Hockey Arena: Slovakia 4, Finland 1.
The men's Olympic hockey tournament starts with a stunner. Habs star Juraj Slafkovsky puts on a show with two goals and an assist. Iowa Wild goalie Samuel Hlavaj stands on his head.
Bedlam here in the arena with Slovak fans going wild. This is what Olympic hockey is about.
Here's some fun trivia for you: The first ever gold medal in luge women's doubles was won by the Italians at their home Olympics. What a fun story. Lots of tears from Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer as they're mobbed by their team in celebration after the run.
Germany finishes second and Austria takes third. The Americans finish fifth, the same position they were in after the first run.
There will be no medal for Chevonne Forgan and Sophia Kirkby in luge women’s doubles, as the U.S. was bumped to fourth with one sled left and finished fifth.
It's gold for the home Italian duo of Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer! The final run of women's doubles luge medal round ends in dramatic style as Voetter and Oberhofer run a 1:46.28 time to secure gold!
No medal for the U.S. duo in the final, however…
That was as soft a job as you'll ever see defending an empty net by Finland. Five NHL stars refusing to put a body on Slovakia, which puts puck into empty net to pull off a stunning upset to open the Olympics. Minnesota Wild farmhand Samuel Hlavaj, who is having a horrific year for the AHL Iowa Wild, makes 38 saves.
I voted for Slovakia in our staff survey as the potential biggest surprise in the Men's Hockey tournament. It was not a popular opinion let's just say. With the upset over Finland, the reigning bronze medalists now have a realistic path back to the medal round.
The Milan Olympics men's hockey tournament will open with an upset! Adam Ruzicka's empty-nettere gives Slovakia a 4-1 lead over Finland. Huge moment for a Slovak team that was dead in the water 10 years ago and has been steadily on the rise of late.
The upset is all but inevitable now as Slovakia cashes in on the empty-net opportunity with a pedestrian effort by Finland to protect the crease.
What a start to the men's tournament.
There are several skaters still to compete in the men's 1,000 meters but so far it's Italy's Daniele di Stefano who leads the way with a time of 1:08.17.
Just 0.04 seconds behind is Canada's Laurent Dubreuil, while South Korea's Kyung-Min Koo occupies the third-place spot.
We'll soon see the American trio of Conor McDermott-Mostowy, Cooper McLeod and medal favorite Jordan Stolz take to the ice.
There's still over four minutes remaining and Finland is in desperation mode attempting to stave off the upset, pulling the goalie already.
It's just about go-time here in the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium for the first session of the men's curling tournament. For the first time since 2002, the U.S. team will not feature John Shuster. Danny Casper is the new U.S. skip after his rink beat Shuster's at U.S. trials. The Americans take on the Czechs, Great Britain faces China, Canada takes on Germany and Italy faces Sweden.
Not familiar with Danny Casper? Check out Matt Slater's piece on him from earlier today.

Here’s something you don’t see too often at the Olympics — there was some kind of scuffle in the stands near us as they clean the ice for the second half of the men’s 1,000-meter speedskating race. Several security guards just dragged a man out of the grandstand, and there are gobs of guards standing around a particular section where the argument seemed to start. Seems more rowdy than ugly, but for an early evening at the rink, still a bit of a surprise.
USA's Jordan Stolz may be the favorite but this crowd at Milan Speed Skating Arena is 99 percent Dutch. It's a sea of orange for the Netherlands, whose best chance to medal is Jenning de Boo, who goes in the same heat as Stolz. American's Conor McDermott-Mostowy and Cooper McLeod are also racing today, in heats 12 and 13, for their Olympic debuts.
Juraj Slafkovský's meeting the moment here.
I wrote yesterday about how he's embracing the pressure of a nation upon him:

SLOVAKIA IS IN PRIME POSITION TO PULL OFF THE UPSET NOW!
On the power play, Šimon Nemec centers the puck to Juraj Slafkovský with a lot of real estate ahead of him. He drifts forward and uncorks a wrister that is perfectly placed, ricocheting off the crossbar and in with immense power for his second goal of the afternoon.
Finland is in real danger now, trailing 3-1 with less than 10 minutes to go.
