The best team in the NHL gets set for a marquee matchup on Monday afternoon, as the Washington Capitals pay a visit to the Colorado Avalanche on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The Avalanche have been a wagon for the first half of the season, and have established themselves as the frontrunner to win the Presidents’ Trophy. Led by Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, as well as great goaltending from whoever is in net, the Avs have done a great job of staying well ahead of the pack from the onset of the season.
Despite losing back-to-back games to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nashville Predators last week, Colorado remains far atop the Central Division standings, sitting 11 points up on the Dallas Stars.
The Capitals also have a few notable stars on their roster, including the game’s greatest goal scorer, Alex Ovechkin. However, they have not been able to find the mojo that led to finishing last year’s regular season with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Washington has dropped three of its past four games, the team sits fourth in the Metorpolitan Division, three points back of the last Wild Card spot in the East.
