Two Original Six franchises get set to renew their rivalry on Saturday night, as the Boston Bruins play host to the Montreal Canadiens.
The rivalry between the Bruins and Canadiens dates all the way back to Boston’s first season in 1924-25. Since then, the regional foes have duked it out in some of hockey’s greatest moments, pitting fanbases against oneanother, and drawing interest from all those who watch the game.
Saturday night’s clash is important as both teams are fighting for position in the Atlantic Division standings. Montreal was, for a moment, a favorite to challenge for the top spot in the division, though the team has hit a bit of a rough patch over the past month. The Canadiens remain third in the Atlantic, four points back of the first-place Detroit Red Wings.
The Bruins are not all that far behind, but they are also fighting to simply stay in a playoff spot. With wins in eight of the team’s previous 10 games, Boston is fifth in the division, holding onto the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Saturday night will mark the 943rd meeting between the two rivals. The Canadiens lead the rivalry, 472-356-103-12, with the Habs winning the latest meeting in Boston just last month.
