Get ready hockey fans!
The NHL Winter Classic is here, with puck drop coming later today in the league’s annual outdoor game.
Here’s how to watch and all you need to know for this year’s version of the Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve.
Ironically enough, this year’s installment of the Winter Classic will actually take place not on New Year’s Day, but instead on New Year’s Eve at 5 p.m.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman made this decision to move the game a day earlier because of the three highly anticipated College Football Playoff matchups that take place at 1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
It’s the first time in Winter Classic history that the game will be played on New Year’s Eve and not New Year’s Day.
The Winter Classic will air today on TNT and TruTV, and streaming on Max.
The Blackhawks and Blues will face off in the 16th installment of the annual outdoor contest.
Chicago and St. Louis are both currently on the outside looking of a playoff spot, with the Blues having 38 points (17-17-4) and the Blackhawks with 26 points (12-23-2) heading into the Winter Classic.
This year’s Winter Classic will be held at Wrigley Field, home of MLB’s Chicago Cubs.
It’s the second time that Wrigley Field will hos the outdoor event, with the first one coming almost 16 years to the day when the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Blackhawks 6-4 on Jan. 1, 2009.
The answer is yes! On New Year’s Day in 2017, the Blues host the Blackhawks at Busch Stadium (home of MLB’s St. Louis Cardinals) and defeated Chicago 4-1 in front of 46,556 fans.
