The official team name of the NHL’s Utah franchise remains up in the air — with another recent development throwing a wrench in the works.
Entering the league for the 2024-25 season under the name “Utah Hockey Club,” the franchise has had temporary name, jerseys and colors, with the expectation to select an official name by the 2025-26 season.
The “Utah Yeti” or “Utah Yetis” were widely expected to be the selection. On Wednesday, though, the team announced that the existing Yeti cooler brand was unwilling to agree to a co-existence agreement, meaning the NHL squad couldn’t secure a patent for the “Yeti” name.
Instead, Utah Hockey Club is moving forward with three other potential name options — and allowing fans to vote on which one they like best through in-person polling. The team, which is 21-21-7 this season, will give thousands of fans the opportunity to dictate what the franchise’s final name will be.
Here’s what to know about the Utah Hockey Club team name voting and the three options available.

Fans will only be able to vote on the team name in person at Delta Center over Utah Hockey Club’s next four home games. The voting will include team names “but also logos and branding treatments,” per the franchise, and it’s expecting around 15,000 fans for each game.
Staff will be positioned around the arena, assisting fans as they cast their votes before and during upcoming games. The surveys will “utilize Qualtrics to ensure fairness, accuracy and unbiased results through best practice, survey-research methodology.”
Here are the four games at Delta Center where fans will be able to vote on Utah Hockey Club’s team name:

There are three remaining name options for Utah Hockey Club, with “Yeti” and “Yetis” ruled out. They are as follows:
Utah Hockey Club and Utah Mammoth were in the team's last round of potential names, while Utah Wasatch is a new addition to the list.
“Wasatch” references the state of Utah’s Wasatch mountain range, which is known for its ski resorts.
Because the Wasatch name is virtually a replacement of the Yeti name, it would allow the team to use a “mythical snow creature in the form of a Yeti” as a mascot, per ESPN.
“We wanted to honor the idea that people have for a mythical snow creature,” Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan said. “We wanted to honor the sentiment of one of those names while also including a Utah-centric version.”
