Get ready for four nations to face off.
The NHL is hitting pause on the 2024-25 regular season, but it’s not for an All-Star break — it’s for the 4 Nations Face-Off. The USA, Canada, Sweden and Finland are bringing 23 players from the NHL to a week-long competition starting in Montreal and ending in Boston.
The hockey world has been deprived of having all of the world’s elite talent on the ice at the same time since 2016, when the World Cup of Hockey took place. With the NHL boycotting the 2018 and 2022 Olympics, the players haven’t been able to represent their home country on the biggest stage.
That changes in 2025, with four of the largest hockey beds in the world coming together for the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Here is everything to know about the 4 Nations Face-Off, including the tournament structure, prize money and more.

The 4 Nations Face-Off is an international best-on-best ice hockey tournament featuring four countries competing against one another — the USA, Canada, Sweden and Finland.
Each team consists of 23 players — 13 forwards, seven defensemen and three goalies — from the NHL representing their home countries. It marks the first time since the best players from the NHL have gone head-to-head in international action since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Each team will play three tournament games in a traditional round-robin format in order to accumulate points in the standings. During the first part of the tournament, teams earn three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win, one point for an overtime loss and zero points for a regulation loss.
The two top teams in the standings after the six games will play in a championship contest to decide the 4 Nations Face-Off winner.
This is the first time the true best-on-best in hockey have played internationally since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
No, there is no All-Star Game taking place for the 2024-25 NHL season. The 4 Nations Face-Off is essentially replacing the All-Star Weekend for this year.
It’s not an uncommon practice used by the NHL. In years past, when the league would send its players to the Olympics, the regular season would be paused so that the stars could go and represent their country in hopes of a gold medal, and there would be no All-Star Game.
However, the NHL has not sent players to the previous two Olympics, with the top hockey talent in the world missing the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics.
The NHL schedule hit pause on Monday, Feb. 10 for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Games will resume Saturday, Feb. 22, giving those not attending the international tournament a nearly two-week break from playing.
Players will receive some sort of share of the earnings, since the event is presented by the NHL and the NHLPA. It’s an event that was created to generate revenue, and the players will benefit from that sum.
It’s uncertain whether the winning team will receive bonus funds.
In addition, a trophy and bragging rights are up for grabs.
