Troy goaltender Annelies Bergmann made 21 saves for Team USA’s collegiate women’s select team in a 4-1 win over Canada in the first of a three-game series at the Lake Placid Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Bergmann recorded a 25-5-5 record with 10 shutouts and a .943 save percentage last year and was named ECAC goaltender of the year.
Forward Cassie Hall (South Lyon) had a goal and an assist and Elyssa Biederman (Franklin) was scoreless. Game 2 is Thursday at 2:30 p.m., and Game 3 is Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Players who still hold collegiate eligibility were eligible to be selected for Team USA, which won the 2024 series with a 1-1-0-1 record, winning game three by a 7-1 margin.
Also Wednesday, Canada beat the U.S., 4-1, in the U18 women’s tournament in Lake Placid.
At the men’s U18 tournament in Trencin, Slovakia, Team USA beat Germany, 8-1.
Former Red Wings forward Gerard Gallant has been named the new head coach of the Kontinental Hockey League’s Shanghai Dragons.
Gallant last coached the New York Rangers for two seasons, earning back-to-back 100-point seasons, but he left the NHL team after its first-round playoff exit in 2023.
He has a 369-262-70 coaching record in the NHL, with stints leading the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights and New York. He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in 2017-18 with the Golden Knights.
The 61-year-old Gallant is from Summerside, P.E.I., and went on to play in the NHL for Detroit and Tampa Bay, scoring 211 goals with 269 assists and 1,674 penalty minutes.
Gallant takes over a team that was originally based in Beijing as Kunlun Red Star, created as part of China’s preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The newly branded franchise will be based in St. Petersburg, Russia, until its home in Shanghai is ready.
Veteran defenceman Chad Ruhwedel who spent eight of his 13 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and won the 2017 Stanley Cup with the team, announced his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday.
Ruhwedel played five games last season with the New York Rangers, where he recorded an assist. The 35-year-old blueliner added three goals and 18 points in 50 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.
From 2016-24, Ruhwedel appeared in 326 of his 369 career games with the Penguins, including a career-high 78 games in the 2021-22 season, where he recorded career highs in goals (4) and points (13).
in his career, Ruhwedel scored 13 goals and tallied 50 points over 369 games with the Sabres, Penguins and Rangers.
