[WATCH] Rob Ray’s First Fight Ever – 92.9 WBUF

Rob Ray fought a lot during his long NHL career. In fact, according to HockeyFights.com, he had a whopping 294 fights for mostly the Buffalo Sabres. He also played for the Ottawa Senators.
"Razor" was a tough guy, to say the least. He had a unique style where he would intentionally lose his jersey in a fight to give himself a big advantage. That method was outlawed eventually by the NHL and is known as the "Rob Ray Rule." It states that any player who fights and doesn't have their jersey properly tied down and loses it during the fight will get a game misconduct. There are a lot of fighters in NHL history, but only Ray has a rule named after him.
Losing his jersey (and pads) wasn't how it started for Ray, though. In fact, his first fight was in 1989 against their rival, the Boston Bruins, against Nevin Markwart. Hockey Fights doesn't have that video, but Sabres Classics on X does.
Rob won the bout, as he would so often during his career. Ray today, of course, is the color commentator for the Buffalo Sabres broadcasts. He retired from hockey after the 2003-2004 season. He's beloved by fans in Buffalo for his nasty nature and willingness to stick up for his teammates, which is something fans have wanted more of during a 14-year playoff drought.
