The VTSU Castleton women’s hockey team is raising awareness of breast cancer with its annual “Pink the Rink” game on Saturday.
The team partners with the Rutland Regional Medical Center for the event and in the last 16 years, the Spartans have raised around $115,000 for the Foley Cancer Center.
There will be basket raffles and jersey auctions at Saturday’s game.
Members of the team said this cause is personal and they’re motivated to make an impact together.
“I personally have a family member who died from breast cancer, and I have a really close family friend who actually beat breast cancer. So, it really hits close to home every time I step on the ice for this game. It’s just really special to be able to fundraise for such an important cause and be able to go out and wear the pink jerseys and see all the fans in the stands,” said player Rainey Lay.
Women’s Hockey Coach Tim McAuliffe said this game has gotten bigger every year and has gained lots of community support.
“Every coach talks about being part of something bigger than yourself right, and you can talk about it. But when you see it, when you really see it, it’s special, and everybody on this team gets to see the impact that they’re having,” McAuliffe said.
The game will start Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Spartan Arena in Rutland.
