Graphic video shows former NHL player Adam Johnson’s neck being slit by another player’s ice skate during a fatal collision over the weekend.
The 29-year-old center was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in England when opposing player Matt Petgrave left his feet during a collision, resulting in the blade from his skate fatally cutting Johnson. Blood immediately shot from Johnson’s neck onto the ice as referees cleared the playing area so he could receive emergency medical assistance. The stadium was cleared while Johnson was treated.
The Panthers issued a statement saying the team was “truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident” Sunday.
South Yorkshire Police said they were investigating the circumstances of Johnson’s death, which some social media users weren’t convinced was accidental. Cops urged the public to “avoid speculation” while they examined the contact leading to Johnson’s fatal injury, according to the BBC.
Petgrave took his social media accounts offline amid accusations he intended to injure his opponent, hockey site Blade of Steel reported Monday.
“This was kung-fu kick by the guy in red,” said one X user who posted video of the bloody incident online.
The National Hockey League mourned its former player’s death in a statement expressing condolences for his family. The Penguins, Johnson’s team from 2018 to 2020, also sent the organization’s regrets to his family.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins join the entire hockey world in mourning the loss of Adam Johnson, whose life tragically ended far too soon,” the team posted on X.
Only one hockey player has died on the ice during an NHL game, according to Bleacher Report. That death was the result of a 1968 head injury in Bloomington, Minn.
Johnson was a Minnesota native who played whose journeyman career also took him to Sweden, Canada and Germany before landing him in the U.K.
