The Vancouver Canucks head to Rogers Place to face off against the 2025 Stanley Cup finalists, the Edmonton Oilers, as we prep for the NHL season beginning October 7. It’s the teams first meeting since January, when the Oilers ran out impressive 6-2 victors.
The Oilers have played five preseason games so far and have looked impressive in the main, despite a 3-2 OT loss to Calgary to begin the campaign last Sunday. Edmonton immediately gained their revenge though, seeing out a 3-0 win on Monday, with goals coming from Connor Clattenburg, Kasperi Kapanen, and Riley Stillman.
Two days later, they claimed a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets, before suffering a 4-1 loss to Seattle on September 24. Most recently, though, they bounced back with another 4-0 win over the Jets on Friday, with a goal and an assist each for Darnell Nurse and Joshua Samanski, along with goals for Kasperi Kapanen and Noah Philip.
While Vancouver have just three preseason games under their belt, their only loss came from a 5-3 defeat to the Kraken in their first game, only to dish out a 4-2 beating on Seattle in their most recent showing on September 26 as Braeden Cootes, Evander Kane, Filip Hronek, and Jake DeBrusk all found the back of the net.
It’ll be one close battle Sunday night, as the Oilers are well into their preseason with 11 goals scored so far, while the Canucks come in with 10 after just three games. Catch puck drop tonight at 8 pm ET, and get the full rundown of our predictions and odds for the game below!
The Oilers fancy their home territory tonight, although
The Canucks have looked threatening in the offensive zone, scoring 10 goals after just nine periods played, but they have allowed eight goals in their own net, and only defenseman Victor Mancici stands out on the preseason goalscoring table with two goals in two games.
The Oilers find themselves with a well-tuned offense now five games deep into their preseason, with right-winger Kasperi Kapanen (two goals) and defenseman Darnell Nurse (two goals, one assist) leading the charge on the preseason charts.
The Oilers are on home ice also and that could make the biggest difference, with the hosts having thrashed Vancouver 6-2 in their last meeting there earlier this year. The Oilers come into this one as favorites at -180 on the Money Line but they can win with room to spare so take them cover at juicier odds of +140.
Neither team has had any real trouble finding the back of the net. The Canucks are averaging over three goals per game, and while the OIlers are not quite at the level, they have slammed in 16 in their last three games against their Canadian rivals.
There were eight goals scored between the two in the most recent meeting, while the Oilers also enjoyed a 7-3 success in Vancouver last season. Goals look likely on Sunday night.
