The USA continues its dominance, shutting out Switzerland 5-0 and beginning the Olympics with three straight wins.
The USA women’s hockey team romped to three wins to start its Olympic journey, outscoring Czechia, Finland, and its recent opponent, Switzerland, by a combined 15-1.
Switzerland was unable to slow the Americans’ momentum on Monday. Fresh off a 4-0 loss to Canada that only got out of hand in the third period, the Swiss were shut out again, this time by the United States.

A shutout win for Gwyneth Phillips, as she faced 28 fewer shots than Switzerland’s goalie Andrea Brändi, who, despite allowing 5 goals, made 44 saves.
The USA did an excellent job avoiding looking ahead to Tuesday’s showdown with Canada, which will be the most anticipated matchup of the preliminary round.

5:01 p.m.: Another dominant performance by the USA as they shut out Switzerland 5-0. The Americans outshot the Swiss 49-21 in three periods of play. The United States is now 4-0 against the Swiss in the Olympics all-time.

4:44 p.m.: GOAL! The Americans continue to extend their lead, scoring their third goal of the period. Caroline Harvey was set up by Alex Carpenter, who had just scored a goal 12 seconds earlier.

4:42 p.m.: GOAL! Alex Carpenter buries a borderline breakaway goal. Hilary Knight made a nice touch pass to give Carpenter a clear shot at the net.
4:36 p.m.: The Americans thought they were about to pile it on Switzerland. Team USA scored two goals in less than a minute but it was then overturned.

4:31 p.m.: GOAL! The United States wastes no time in the final period to extend its lead. Hannah Bilka gets a piece of a shot from Taylor Heise, who is credited with the assist.
4:29 p.m.: Start of the third period.
4:09 p.m.: Another dominant period for the Americans, as they’re outshooting Switzerland 37 to 13. However, Switzerland gets 37 more seconds on the power play when the third period resumes.
4:06 p.m.: Switzerland will end the second period on the power play. Abbey Murphy gets sent to the box for an illegal hit. This player advantage will carry over to the third period.
4:04 p.m.: Things are getting a bit chippy as Switzerland’s frustrations are starting to show. The previous two shots ended in a stoppage and plenty of pushing.

3:58 p.m.: GOAL! The United States pressure has been relentless all game long. They have worn down the Swiss defense and goaltender. Joy Dunne scores an unassisted goal to extend the USA’s lead to two.

3:56 p.m.: The clock has just reached 6 minutes left in the second period, and Andrea Brändi has made 30 saves. Switzerland is relying heavily on its goaltender to keep it in this game.
3:49 p.m.: 10 minutes into the second period, and Switzerland has generated only one shot on goal. The United States has put Andrea Brändi to work in this game. Brändi has 25 saves as opposed to Gwyneth Phillips, who has only faced nine shots.

3:45 p.m.: Team USA fails to capitalize on its player advantage. A fairly lackluster power play, but one that did force Andrea Brändi to add to her save total.
3:41 p.m.: The United States will get its first power play of the game. Lena-Marie Lutz gets sent to the box for an illegal hit.
3:37 p.m.: The United States starts the second period with continued pressure and four 4 shots on goal in four minutes. Switzerland has not gotten a shot on goal and has hardly had the puck in the U.S. zone.
3:30 p.m.: Start of the second period.
3:16 p.m.: The United States dominated the opening period, outshooting Switzerland 17-6. Haley Winn scored the opening goal for the U.S., set up by Harvey Knight, who was credited with the assist. Both goalies have been sharp; the only reason Switzerland isn’t down by more is Andrea Brändi’s goaltending.

3:06 p.m.: The United States killed the penalty in large part thanks to Gwyneth Phillips’ excellent goaltending during the Switzerland power play. Switzerland had two shots on goal, both of which were scoring chances.
3:04 p.m.: The first power play of the game belongs to Switzerland. They’ll look to even the score with the player advantage. Rory Guilday is called for tripping and will spend the next two minutes in the penalty area.
2:57 p.m.: It’s been all USA in the first 10 minutes of the opening period, the puck has hardly been in harm’s way, and they’re outshooting Switzerland 10 to 3.

2:52 p.m.: GOAL! The United State’s relentess pressure eventually leads to a goal. Haley Winn finishes in front of a beautiful setup by Harvey Knight, who is credited with the assist.

2:49 p.m.: In the first 6 minutes, both goalies have been forced to make saves for their nations. Switzerland’s Andrea Brändi made the best save of the game when she denied Taylor Heise on a breakaway.
2:45 p.m.: Two early opportunities for Switzerland, but Gwyneth Phillips turns both away. Switzerland has not had another shot on goal, whereas the United States rifled off three straight.
