Team USA is taking on Sweden in a heavyweight clash in the quarterfinals of the men's hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Dylan Larkin opened the scoring midway through the second period with a redirection from point-blank range.
Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman suffered a lower-body injury in warmups and is not playing in this game.
Pretty big moment here. It's Team USA's second power play of the game, as Michael mentioned. Not a ton happened on the first.
P2 2:32 – USA 1, Sweden 0
Markstrom struggles to make a save and Matthews is nearly able to scramble the puck home.
Moments later, Nelson tries to split a pair of defensemen and earning a tripping call from Lindholm. Second power play of the game, both for the U.S.
The U.S. has done a good job of creating and sustaining traffic in front of Swedish goalie Jacob Markstrom, and not just on Dylan Larkin's goal. Markstrom continues to play pretty well, though.
Quinn Hughes has now recorded five assists in four games at this tournament.
P2 4:50 – USA 1, Sweden 0
Werenski drives down the left wing and looks to shoot across Markstrom's body, but the Swedish netminder snags the puck out of the air.
P2 6:52 – USA 1, Sweden 0
The Tkachuks are doing Tkachuk things. Brady crashes the net and takes a few whacks at Markstrom as the whistle sounds. A few Swedish players take exception start pushing and shoving. Matthew joins the scrum before cooler heads prevail.
A.J. Mleczko just relayed to Snoop that Keith Tkachuk said Matthew has "a punchable face."
"At least Daddy's keeping it real," Snoop said. He also said that "we need to start doing stories" on all the NHL players who are related. Snoop Dogg: apparently not an Athletic subscriber.
The Americans, finally, have a goal in this game. Dylan Larkin opens the scoring after tipping home Jack Hughes’ point shot. A bit of a shame because I was just about to say that Jacob Markstrom’s played decently in this second period.
P2 8:57 – USA 1, Sweden 0
Larkin with a great redirection in the crease to finally beat Markstrom!
Assisted by the Hughes brothers.
P2 9:10 – USA 0, Sweden 0
Markstrom fails to catch a shot from the blue line. Boldy collects the rebound and has a great chance, but Markstrom denies him.
Jake Guentzel's chance on that cross-crease pass from Auston Matthews was the Americans' best of the game so far.
P2 10:10 – USA 0, Sweden 0
Sweden is upping the pressure now. Forsberg nearly scores on a wraparound but Miller is there to save Hellebuyck.
P2 11:17 – USA 0, Sweden 0
Boldy and Matthews connect on a pretty play to set up Guentzel in front of the net, but Markstrom makes a big save, the puck trickling just wide of the goal.
Team Canada’s management staff, Doug Armstrong, Jim Nill and Kyle Dubas, are in attendance here.
This game has been sloppy enough to frustrate Snoop. He's not impressed with the Americans' spacing in the neutral zone, and I gotta say, neither am I.
P2 13:42 – USA 0, Sweden 0
Werenski and Faber force decent saves from Markstrom. We reach the first commercial break after an extended stretch without a stoppage. Both teams are still looking for the breakthrough goal here.
According to Team Sweden, Victor Hedman suffered a lower-body injury in warmups and will not play in this game. He wanted to be on the bench to support his teammates. It's a huge loss for Sweden. Even when he's not at full strength, Hedman dictates play at both ends of the ice.
P2 17:34 – USA 0, Sweden 0
Thompson with a one-time blast from the faceoff dot, but Markstrom gets over well to make the stop.
P2 18:45 – USA 0, Sweden 0
Matthews steals the puck behind the Swedish net and tries to slide it to Guentzel in the slot, but Eriksson Ek makes an important play to intercept the pass.
