The NHL will take a two-week hiatus and there will be no All-Star game this year. Instead, this round-robin, best-on-best international men’s hockey tournament features NHL players from the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden.
A win in regulation counts as three points, a win in overtime or a shootout counts as two and a loss in overtime or a shootout earns one point. The two teams with the most points at each round will advance to face each other in the championship game.
The games will take place Feb. 12-20 with host cities Montreal, Canada and Boston Massachusetts. USA and Canada are the co-favorites.
The United States watched rival Canada escape home ice with two points in a 4-3 overtime victory over Sweden. Now, the Americans will take the stage in Montreal for a pivotal opener.
Team USA boasts a deep and well-balanced roster into the inaugural showcase. A litany of star power is eligible is at its disposal, including former Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews, last year’s playoff points leader and Florida Panthers Stanley Cup champion Matthew Tkachuk, as well as Kyle Connor, who has the sixth-most points (69) in the NHL at the break. Jack Eichel is a maestro on the ice with the fourth-most assists (50) in the league.
The defense is just as stacked, though not as physical as some of the other units in the tournament. It features Norris Trophy winner and power play specialist Adam Fox, Brock Faber and Charlie McAvoy. Unlike Canada’s uncertainty in goal, the Americans are solidified with Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck. The Winnipeg Jets goaltender currently leads the league in goals allowed per game (2.07) and goals saved above expected (27.8). Hellebuyck is second in save percentage with a sparkling .925%. He is the heavy favorite to capture the Vezina once again.
The United States defeated Finland in the world junior hockey championships five weeks ago. Will the NHL’s version continue the trend?
Canada awaits on Feb. 15.

Decimated by injuries, Finland will need to rely on its talented offense if it wants to shock the world.
Carolina Hurricanes forward Mikko Rantanen may be slumping since his arrival from Colorado, but this new scenery could reignite his stellar play. Rantanen is currently ninth in goals (26) and points (66). Dallas Stars center Roope Hintz (22 goals) could be an x-factor in this matchup. He has three consecutive seasons with 30 or more goals.
The puck could move swiftly with the likes of Alexander Barkov and Sebastian Aho creating opportunities, but the defense is a major question mark.
Niko Mikkola and Esa Lindell will have their hands full against the Americans' star power. The Finns will need to replicate Sweden’s style from last night, hoping to hold even, and contain Team USA’s potent pairing on the front line. Nashville Predators goalkeeper Juuse Saros is expected to anchor the net. He has allowed 2.95 goals per game with an .899% save percentage. Saros is historically stoic under pressure.
Seen as the biggest underdog of the tournament, if Finland can keep up with the Americans offensively, it positions itself for an admirable showing on the world stage.
