The Red Wings’ week ended on a sour note as star netminder John Gibson was injured in their game against the New Jersey Devils after losing their captain, Dylan Larkin, on Friday night.
Gibson’s injury occurred late in the second period in New Jersey’s Prudential Center, after Timo Meier sent Lucas Raymond bowling into the goal. The netminder absorbed the impact with his leg pads and was slow to get up, though Gibson did finish out the final few seconds of the period. Cam Talbot finished the game.
Since being acquired in the offseason from the Anaheim Ducks, Gibson has taken over Detroit’s net from the incumbent Talbot. After a slow start to his season the 32 year old goalie has started in 40 games for the Red Wings, excluding tonight’s contest, with a 23-13-2 record. The Red Wings have relied heavily on Gibson’s strong play over the last few weeks, and his .906 sv % has been covering for a lot of Detroit defensive lapses.
Before exiting the game, Gibson had stopped 20 of 20 shots from the Devils, and has had four shutouts this season.
Gibson had to exit another game earlier this week against Nashville, with the Red Wings calling up goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa after.
“He got hit in a bad spot and didn’t feel good after that happened. He should be fine, I would think.” According to head coach Todd McLellan.
Based on recent history, that may mean Talbot gets the nod in the starter’s net hen the Red Wings face off against the Florida Panthers Tuesday night. Hopefully he will be back before the end of the Red Wings’ four game road trip.

Wel PBB you preached about it and warned of it. They ran him like a mule and it happened. Although we won 3/0 we could be in big trouble if Gibson is out for long.
He will not be out. He is fine.
Certainly hope you are right RW. Where did you get the news.
Talbot is not Gibson obviously, bu the is a capable fill in who is a cagey vet with years of starting experience. .If he has to fill in and the teams supports Talbot he will be just fine. Gibson will be back next game most likely . The team is working together which makes it much easier for the goalies, no matter who is playing. Nothing new about that. I should not have to remind you guys about that. . Geez
Thanks, PBB bobblehead!

Obie,
There isn’t anything negative about Talbot between the pipes that a Talbot apologist will accept. If he wins tomorrow night its a ” I told you so” and if he loses, well “the defenseman didn’t do their job” , or “the team didn’t support the goalie enough”. It’s a never ending diatribe of excuses. It’s like trying to reason with a teenager about taking out the trash or cleaning their room.
Talbot played well in the third period, last night, very well actually and as a fan I couldn’t be more thrilled.
I however am a realist, I lean more towards an “outcome” based view of performance rather than “faith” based.
Talbot in the net brings a 70% chance that we lose, those are the numbers. To all the apologists out there I wish it was different, believe me I do. I however wasn’t completely convinced that we should have gotten rid of Alex Lyon rather than Talbot. Look at Lyon’s numbers.
If Talbot brings the kind of game all the apologists say he has I’ll be appropriately complimentary and excited to no end. I however have my doubts…
Lucky #13, I am not sure where you are getting your information from but my efforts at getting a relevant injury report on Gibby is coming up zip…
The guy looked in pretty bad shape when he left the ice last night. Time will tell.
Obie, just for the record, I am never going to be very popular as a realist or as a boat rocker. There are those that view that as overly critical and a “fair weather fan”. I however detest mediocrity and I am unwilling to accept that “the minimum is the standard”. Unfortunately there are fans that do. It takes all kinds…
