Catamounts looking to work on penalty corner efficiency after 2-1 loss against Fairfield
Another busy day of Sunday field hockey in Vermont gave us a pair of college teams in action at their own home fields in the Green Mountain State.
The University of Vermont was unable to turn the home opportunity into a win, losing their third straight game after a 2-1 loss against Fairfield University.
Vermont head coach Kate Pfeifer emphasized that being able to finish more of their penalty corner into goals will be key for the Catamounts to find success in the future. Vermont had 10 penalty corners in the entire game, including five in the first quarter, but only converted on one of them for a goal.
“Executing corners is going to be really important,” Pfeifer said. “We found a way to earn a lot in the last couple games, and we got to continue to build confidence in that.”
Maddy Weaver scored the lone goal for the Catamounts after a shot from Sophia LeFranc deflected off her stick and in for the score. The Stags featured a big day from Camille Perlov, who scored both of Fairfield’s goals, leading to the eventual victory.
At Peter Kohn Field, Middlebury College was also unable to get in the win column, losing in double overtime 2-1 against Wesleyan University.
Hadley Crowther scored first for the Panthers, sneaking behind the defense and converting on a penalty corner. That goal gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead at the half.
Emily Smith scored both of the Cardinals’ goals after that, including the game-winner in double overtime.
