The U.S. women’s hockey team is opening play at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics against Czech Republic.
The United States leads 5-1 in the third period — Alex Carpenter, Joy Dunne, Hayley Scamurra (2x) and Hilary Knight scoring for the Americans and Barbora Jurickova for the Czechs.

P3 7:00 – United States 5, Czech Republic 1
The Czechs nearly have a clean break on goal but the centering pass deflects off an American player's skate.
Moments later, Frankel makes a great save to keep the score as is.
P3 8:30 – United States 5, Czech Republic 1
Play getting a bit disjointed and less fluid as we head towards the final stages here. A 5-1 win would be a fine way for Team USA to begin their quest for the gold medal here.
P3 12:29 – United States 5, Czech Republic 1
Replays show Abbey Murphy and Czech captain Aneta Tejralova jawing a bit during a stoppage in play, Tejralova giving Murphy a light smack with her stick before the two go their separate ways.
Hayley Scamurra is making the most of her minutes today. She’s technically Team USA’s 13th forward, but has two goals in less than five minutes of play.
P3 15:38 – United States 5, Czech Republic 1
A bit of controversy here as Simms gets away with a slight trip on Trnkova and seconds later Scamurra scores her second goal of the game with a quick shot.
Czech Republic head coach Carla MacLeod is visibly upset with the non-call on the bench, making her disagreement known to the refs.
P3 18:30- United States 4, Czech Republic 1
Two massive chances for the Czechs a few seconds apart either side of Edwards emerging from the box, but they fail to cash in.
P3 20:00 – United States 4, Czech Republic 1
The Czechs begin the period with 1:15 left on the power play as Laila Edwards sits in the box for tripping.
Something to keep in mind with that Knight goal — Team USA made some tweaks to its very successful Rivalry Series line combinations ahead of the Olympics. Bilka, Carpenter, and Knight were all paired together on the top line for this game to build off their chemistry from playing together in Seattle. Knight and Carpenter obviously have more USA experience together, as well, and Knight played with Bilka back in Boston before the two joined the Torrent in last year’s PWHL expansion.
Team USA captain Hilary Knight scored a fantastic solo goal in the second period to make it 4-1.
Klara Peslarova has been under heavy pressure throughout this game in Czech Republic's net.
United States 4, Czech Republic 1
Joy Dunne leads all skaters with five shots on goal, while Laila Edwards leads the game with 14:58 of ice time. Edwards will have 1:15 left in the penalty box to serve at the start of the third period, however.
As much as we’re hyping up the young guns and newcomers, don’t forget the absolute legends. Hilary Knight with a power move for Team USA's fourth goal; she found a little space above Peslarova’s shoulder to score.
With that strike, Knight has 13 career Olympic goals. The record is 14 goals, jointly held by Katie King and Natalie Darwitz.
The Americans kill the first 45 seconds of the Czech power play before the horn sounds, leaving 1:15 of PP time to begin the third period.
P2 0:45 – United States 4, Czech Republic 1
Laila Edwards is called for tripping and the Czechs get their first power play of the game.
P2 2:10 – United States 4, Czech Republic 1
A fantastic solo goal by Team USA captain Hilary Knight, who demonstrates her strength to hold off a defender before beating Peslarova high at the near post from close range.
P2 2:55 – United States 3, Czech Republic 1
Dunne with a great wraparound chance in front of net, looking for her second goal of the game, but Peslarova makes the stop.
Second later at the other end of the ice, a Czech defender breaks free down the left wing and fires a dangerous shot that misses the target.
Caroline Harvey has been noticeable so far. This is her second Olympics experience, but despite playing seven games back in 2022, she was used in a limited role. So this is her time to shine at this level, after showing how dynamic she can be at the NCAA level; last year, she put up 18 goals and 63 points in 41 games. This season, she’s already up 17 goals and 54 points in 26 games.
P2 8:58 – United States 3, Czech Republic 1
A great chance right in front of net for Knight but Peslarova makes a point-blank save.
P2 9:25 – United States 3, Czech Republic 1
It’s all Czech Republic at the moment! Frankel is under siege in the American net after giving up a big rebound, but eventually manages to freeze the puck.
