The night began with an ovation for Mario Lemieux that nearly blew the roof off the Bell Centre.
It ended with chants of “Cros-by, Cros-by” as No. 87 got player of the game for his three-assist night.
Two Pittsburgh Penguins legends lifted a nation as the 4 Nations Face-Off kicked off with a thrilling 4-3 overtime win for Canada over Sweden.
The win itself wasn’t a piece of art for Team Canada. A sensational start, a sloppy middle and a thunderous finish. But certainly not an A-plus.
Who cares? What people will remember years from now is the pure affection the Bell Centre crowd doused not surprisingly on a French-Canadian icon but also on an active superstar from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, who as a kid dreamt of wearing the bleu, blanc et rouge.
Sidney Crosby felt the love from the crowd throughout.
“I felt that at the start of the game when they announced the starting lineup,” Crosby said, “all the way through to the end of the game. As someone who loves to play in environments like that — I grew up a Montreal Canadiens fan — to have an ovation like that here was really special and something I’ll always remember.”
