Bromfield’s coed field hockey team opened its season Monday, Sept. 5, with a decisive 5-2 win against the nonleague Tyngsborough Tigers. The game was played on the Trojans’ home field under sunny skies and temperatures that hovered near 80 degrees.
Bromfield dominated Tyngsborough throughout the first quarter, scoring three of its goals during the first 10 minutes of play. Forward Anthony Cianfichi was first to score, followed by junior forward Hannah Huelin on an assist by senior co-captain, Tess Dirstine. Senior forward Sofia Steblovska scored the final point of the period, sending a rebound off the right side of the box past the Tigers’ goalkeeper.

The Tigers held Bromfield scoreless in the second quarter, but Heulin scored once again in the third, and Steblovska added a final point in the fourth with an assist from Cianfichi. Both of Bromfield’s final goals were won on penalty corners.
Tyngsborough scored both of its goals in the third quarter. Senior co-captain Lily Wheeler scored on an assist by Grace Mauti, and eighth-grader Devyn Amico scored the Tigers’ final goal with barely two minutes remaining. Tyngsborough was awarded nearly twice as many penalty corners as Bromfield during the game, but none of its rehearsed plays resulted in a goal.
“We have a deep bench this year, more so, I think, than any other year,” Bromfield coach Miki Fitzgibbons told the Press after the game. “We have a good shot this season to do really well.”

It’s a sentiment shared by the three senior co-captains, Dirstine, midfielder Hanna Wicks, and defender Lyla Kendrick. The team lost only one of its experienced players to graduation last year, and the eight seniors on this year’s squad have been playing together since junior varsity days. “We have a lot of the same kids coming back, which is nice,” said Wicks in a postgame interview. “Our team already has good chemistry.”
The team’s strengths, Wicks said, are its speed and ability to hit the ball hard, which helps attackers to move up field quickly. Case in point: With only moments remaining in the Friday game against Tyngsborough, senior midfielder Anna Selig broke up an attack deep in Bromfield territory and, gaining possession of the ball, counterattacked with a run up the field that left Tiger defenders racing to catch her. Only the umpire’s final whistle prevented a sixth Bromfield goal.
Those skills were on display once again Monday evening as Selig, now playing forward, scored twice to power Bromfield’s 3-1 victory over Midland-Wachusett D League opponent Gardner. The third goal was scored by Cianfichi, who also assisted Selig on one of her goals.
With back-to-back wins, the team ranked second in its league as it prepared for a Wednesday game against Fitchburg.
