Tonight’s crew for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final has two refs who have worked together once this postseason when they joined forces for a Game 7. Friday’s National Hockey League officiating lineup:
Referees Jean Hebert and Chris Rooney are paired up for the second time in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This duo was previously put together in the first round to handle Game 7 between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers (FLA W 6-1).
Jean Hebert most recently worked Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final with referee Kelly Sutherland. He worked the earlier Conference Finals games alongside Garrett Rank at EDM/DAL Game 2 (EDM W 3-0) and CAR/FLA Game 4 (FLA L 3-0). Hebert and Rank were also partnered up in Round 2, working DAL/WPG Game 1, VGK/EDM Game 3 (EDM L 4-3), WSH/CAR Game 4, and TOR/FLA Game 6 (FLA L 2-0). Hebert also officiated TOR/FLA Game 7 (FLA W 6-1) with Chris Rooney and Garrett Rank, after Rank came in as the standby ref following Rooney’s injury.
Hebert worked the opening round with Peter MacDougall, officiating NJD/CAR Game 2, TOR/OTT Game 4, MTL/WSH Game 5, and WPG/STL Game 6.
Florida is 1-2 with Hebert in stripes, while Edmonton has gone 1-1.
Chris Rooney worked two games in the Conference Finals – both out west – after returning to action following a scary injury from a high stick to the face, He worked DAL/EDM Game 4 (EDM W 4-1) with Dan O’Rourke, then returned for DAL/EDM Game 5 (EDM W 6-3) with Wes McCauley.
Rooney worked alongside Graham Skilliter in Round 2 at TOR/FLA Game 1 (FLA L 5-4), WSH/CAR Game 2, and WPG/DAL Game 3. He also handled TOR/FLA Game 7 (FLA W 6-1) with Jean Hebert before leaving due to aforementioned injury. Rooney previously skated with Jon McIsaac in the opening round at STL/WPG Game 2, COL/DAL Game 3, FLA/TBL Game 4 (FLA W 4-2), and EDM/LAK Game 6 (EDM W 6-4).
The Oilers are 3-0 when Rooney’s reffing this postseason, with the Panthers going 2-1.
