Feb. 16 (UPI) — Three people were killed and three more injured in a shooting at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island that police said stemmed from a family dispute.

The father of a North Providence High School senior shot five members of the student’s family during a game at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena on Monday afternoon, injuring three people and killing two before turning the gun on himself, NBC-10 Boston and WPRI-12 reported.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and four were taken to the hospital, where one died and the other three remain in critical condition, CBS-5 reported.

Police said during a press conference that the shooter died from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

“It seems like this was a targeted event and it may have been a family dispute, but we are still investigating and it is very early hours,” Pawtucket, R.I., Police Chief Tina Goncalves told reporters this afternoon.

The arena, located just outside of Providence, was hosting the high school’s “Senior Night” game between the Coventry-Johnston co-op team and the Blackstone Valley Schools team, which is made up of players from two public schools and two private schools.

WPRI reported that a live-stream of the video showed the game stopping at the sound of gunshots in the stands before people on and off the ice began to run for the exits.

“What should have been a joyful occasion, with dozens of families, students and supporters … was instead marked by violence and fear,” Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien said in a statement.
