Long-time NHL.com writer Dan Rosen believes it’s 50-50 whether Jason Robertson stays or goes after seven seasons with the Dallas Stars.
“The Stars certainly are weighing a lot of factors because this isn’t a player you just up and trade,” Rosen wrote in his mailbag this week. “He’s too valuable, but at what point is the price too high?”
The Red Wings are believed to be one of the teams that will make a push to land Robertson if the Stars opt to trade him.
Robertson has one season remaining on a contract with a $7.75 million cap hit. He becomes a restricted free agent next summer. He’s two years removed from UFA status.
“If you’re looking at the short term, though it will be tight, Dallas can be cap compliant this season with Robertson’s cap charge on the books,” Rosen wrote.
The cap is rising $8.5 million for the 2026-27 season, but Dallas defenseman Thomas Harley also will be a restricted free agent next summer. He’s a critical re-sign.
Rosen’s summary: “If the Stars feel they have to choose between Harley and Robertson on who to re-sign, it’d be hard to argue against them choosing the rising star defenseman ahead of the 35-goal forward. But does it have to be a choice? What is Dallas sacrificing if it re-signs both? Those are the questions they’re asking themselves.”
A former Red Wings player, born in Ukraine and raised in Sweden, wants to be a Russian citizen.
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame named Chris Chelios as a member of its 2025 induction class.
Forward Jakub Vrana still hoping to land a deal with an NHL team for 2025-26.
