The Detroit Red Wings woke up today and are as close to the bottom of the standings as they are to a playoff position.
After going 0-2-1 in California, the Red Wings (7-9-2) are three points out of a playoff spot and only three points from being tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for the NHL’s worst record. The Red Wings have six teams to climb over just before they get to the Boston Bruins who hold the last spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Red Wings play the Bruins (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network) at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday after facing the New York Islanders (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network) in LCA on Thursday.
The road trip, which started with a win in Pittsburgh was disastrous, especially given the opening win in Pittsburgh. You have to beat teams like Anaheim and San Jose if you are serious about being competitive.
This is a team that launched the season with a pledge to play a stingier brand of defense. But on this California trip, the Red Wings surrendered 15 goals in the three games. They continue to struggle to generate shots on goal. They only managed 63 shots in the three games. Averaging 24.7 shots per game on the season, they rank last in the NHL,
