Team USA faces a big matchup with Denmark, which will be the first ever meeting between the two teams at the Olympics. The Danes have a number of quality NHLers, but USA has the clear depth advantage.
The Americans are coming off of a rousing 5-1 win over Latvia, which set them on a good path for the Olympics. That said, there is still a battle ahead with Canada for the No. 1 overall seed heading into the quarterfinals. USA not only has to beat Denmark, but they also should be thinking about running up the score to have a goal-differential advantage over the Canadians for the No. 1 overall seed. Whoever finishes No. 2 will very likely end up playing Sweden in the quarterfinals due to how their group shook out.
This is a game that has bigger implications than you might think, so USA really cannot hold back even if Denmark looks far weaker on paper.
Team USA will have the same lineup as they did against Latvia except that starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck is not expected to play. Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins is due to make his Olympics debut in net. He helped lead the U.S. to its first gold medal in 92 years last spring at the IIHF Men’s World Championship.
Puck drop is set for 3:10 p.m. ET. You won’t want to miss this one.
Here is how Team USA is projected to line up
Brady Tkachuk – Jack Eichel – Matthew Tkachuk
Jake Guentzel – Auston Matthews – Matt Boldy
Kyle Connor – Dylan Larkin – Tage Thompson
Jack Hughes – Brock Nelson – J.T. Miller
Vincent Trocheck
Quinn Hughes – Charlie McAvoy
Jaccob Slavin – Brock Faber
Jake Sanderson – Zach Werenski
Noah Hanifin
Jeremy Swayman
Connor Hellebuyck
Scratches: Clayton Keller, Jackson Lacombe, Jack Oettinger
