MILAN, Italy — Team USA picked up some early wins before the Winter Olympic opening ceremony even took place.
In the early hours of the morning on the east coast, America picked up some wins for curling in mixed doubles against Norway and Switzerland in round robin.
The U.S. Women’s ice hockey team opened their Olympics with a battle against Czechia. But the European nation was no match for the Americans. Team USA beat Czechia , 5-1 on Thursday. Team USA had four different goal scores led by Hayley Scamurra, the daughter of former Capitals defenseman Peter Scamurra. Hayley Scamurra scored two goals in just 6:45 of ice time. Hilary Knight, Alex Carpenter, and Joy Dunne also scored for the United States.
Team USA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period following Scamurra’s first goal of the game.
In the third period, Hayley Scamurra scored her second goal of the game, giving the Americans a four-goal lead that they would not relinquish.
Team USA is next scheduled to face Finland Feb. 7. Finland’s opening match on Thursday was postponed due a stomach virus leaving most of the team’s players sick
