After three weeks of intense hockey, the IIHF World Championship 2025 gold medal match took place between USA hockey takes and Switzerland, the only team to beat the Americans throughout the entire tournament.
In the knockout stages, the Americans beat Finland 5-2 in the quarterfinals and Sweden 6-2 in the semifinals.
The game resulted in the red, white, and blue winning the gold for the first time in 92 years.
Tage Thompson continued to be a focal point alongside Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland.
For Switzerland they made it to the game after a 6-0 win against Austria and 7-0 over the Danish—the same team that eliminated Canada from the tournament.
The Swiss made the Gold Medal game four times since 2013 but have only left with disappointment and a silver medal despite goalie Leonardo Genoni’s best efforts.

USA won their first gold medal in the IIHF World Championship and handed Switzerland their fourth gold medal loss in 20 years.
The United States were the youngest team of the tournament and were able to come out on top of the best-on-best hockey.
Tage Thompson ripped a wrist shot high past the blocker of Genoni with assists from Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei to secure the win in overtime.

Overtime rules are as follows: there will be a full 20 minute period of 3-on-3 hockey. They will go until there is a goal. If there is no winner after 20, then another 20 of 3-on-3. There will be no shootout.
If a power-play is awarded, it will be 4-on-3 until the penalty expires, four-on-four until the next whistle if no goal is scored before expiration.
For the ninth time in the history of the IIHF World Championships gold medal game, we’re heading to overtime.
Third Period Shots on Goal
After a diving attempt at the net as the puck trickled past Genoni, Janis Moser drew a high sticking call to put the Americans back on the power play.
USA struggled to keep the puck moving enough to get a strong shot on the net for the first half of the power play. Only one shot on goal for the red, white, and blue before Switzerland killed it off.
The pressure continues to raise as the third period passes the halfway point and there continues to be no pucks getting past either goaltender.
Americans were able to hold strong for the remaining moments of the Swiss power play.
Momentum would’ve fully shifted towards the Americans in the latter half of the second period, if not for a power play brought on by a Tage Thompson tripping call.
Switzerland will have a little more than a minute remaining on the power play at the beginning of the third period.
2nd Period Shots On Goal
Tage Thompson’s errant stick took out Nino Niederreiter in the middle of the ice to give Switzerland another chance on the power play and open the scoring of this gold medal match.
As the buzzer went off and the Americans were down a man, Nazar was able to get one last attempt on Genoni before heading into the locker rooms.
After a long time without a whistle, the second period whittled down to the final minutes as the Americans’ offensive pressure hit the highest point of the game so far.
Action post-whistle has picked up again after a few minutes of no whistles.
Logan Cooley was tripped up with a Swiss player and hit the ice as the Americans entered the zone and gingerly limped his way to the bench. No penalty was called.
Despite the constant back-and-forth, it looks like the Americans are starting to piece together more offensive chances than the Swiss.
A few possessions in a row resulted in what looked like somewhat frantic decision-making by the red-and-white.
Shots are in favor of USA, 19-16, at the halfway point.
Frank Nazar drew a penalty shot off thanks to a hooking call on Michael Fora.
Conor Garland was unable to trick Leonardo Genoni with a quick fake to the backhand and reach for the right post but there was no room.
Nazar did not look happy when he was called back to the bench to let another player step up for the shot.

After each whistle, players for both teams are spending some extra time poking at each other. It went so far as Kevin Fiala taking a finger flick to the nose by Michael McCarron before being split up.
Defense continues to be a strength on both ends.

Despite staying in the offensive zone for nearly all of the entire two minutes of the power play, the Americans were unable to get the puck past Genoni.
Conor Garland, Clayton Keller, Tage Thompson, Logan Cooley and Zach Werenski were on the ice.
The Swiss controlled the puck after the end of the power play to take us to the first intermission.
Both teams had 11 shots on goal.

A tripping call on Sven Andrighetto gave the USA power play unit their first chance of the game.
Both teams have struggled to get enough momentum offensively to get established in either end. Defense continues to be a strength.
The Americans were able to kill off the penalty and keep the puck out of the back of their net. Swayman stood strong despite multiple dangerous chances by the Swiss.
Crosschecking called on Zach Werenski after pushing Denis Malgin into the boards. Switzerland gets the first power play of the gold medal match.
After a turnover in the neutral zone led to USA entering Switzerland’s zone with ease, a shot from Brady Skjei deflected off the boards into a chance for Drew O’Connor and Michael McCarron right at Leonardo Genoni’s doorstep.
O’Connor was then pushed into the goalie and almost took the puck with him before the scrum was separated by a whistle.
Both teams are off to the races to make history and earn an IIHF World Championship gold medal or settle for the silver.
Offsides by USA brought out the first whistle of the game at 17:15.
Two usual suspects, Conor Garland and Timo Meier, came together after a whistle in Switzerland’s zone as the physicality escalated early.

Sweden earned back-to-back bronze medals earlier today after defeating Denmark. Denmark toppled Canada for their chance to play on the last day of the 2025 IIHF World Championships.
Three goals in the second period for Sweden separated the two, in what was eventually an insurmountable lead.
The Danish team has never placed higher than 8th at the World Championships before and despite the scoreless first period, they were unable to continue holding back Tre Kronor.
