The former UConn star earned his second gold medal at a major tournament.
Tage Thompson scored a golden goal in overtime on Sunday to beat Switzerland and secure gold for Team USA at the 2025 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm. It’s the program’s first standalone world championship since 1933 and first major tournament crown since the 1996 World Cup.
Both the US and Switzerland failed to score through 60 minutes of regulation in the final, sending the game to sudden-death overtime. Two minutes in, Thompson — who played at UConn from 2015-17 and now stars for the Buffalo Sabres — carried the puck from center ice then uncorked a shot from the top of the circles that found the back of the net for the winner.

Thompson wore an “A” on his sweater and finished with six goals and three assists in 10 games at the world championship. This is his second gold medal at a major tournament after winning World Juniors with Team USA in 2017. He’s coming off a good season with the Sabres, putting up with 44 goals and 28 assists for 72 points in 76 games.
