The Summit boys hockey team will host a home playoff game at Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge for the first time in five years.
After going 13-5 through the regular season, Summit was awarded the No. 4 seed in the Class 4A playoffs. The seeding earns the team a bye in the first round and a second-round matchup against No. 5 Cheyenne Mountain High School on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
“It is a huge accomplishment and shows what the boys have been able to do,” second-year head coach Chris Miller said. “Ever since that Friday Durango game and dealing with that loss, the season has turned around. They really have earned this.”
According to MaxPreps.com, the Summit hockey team has not hosted a home playoff game since taking on Castle View at home in 2020. In that game, Summit fought hard, but fell to Castle View by a score of 5-2.
Summit took on Cheyenne Mountain early in the regular season and recorded a 5-2 loss. A win against Cheyenne Mountain in the playoffs would send Summit to the state semifinal at Colorado College’s Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs on March 1.
“I never want to make excuses, but that was an 8 a.m. in the morning game after playing two games in a row,” Miller said. “We are not a morning team. … The team looks a lot different, we moved some players around, we changed some lines up. … Hopefully this new makeup of this team is able to get it done. The way they are practicing, they are playing some pretty high level hockey.”
The game against Cheyenne Mountain is slated for 6 p.m.
