While I can’t recall the last time the Edmonton Oilers were the clear underdogs at Rogers Place, that’s precisely the scenario entering tonight’s game (TNT, 10 p.m. ET) against the Stanley Cup odds favorite Dallas Stars.
The Oilers’ longer-than-usual odds are unavoidable due to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl’s absences. For all the Stars’ superlatives, they haven’t been brilliant in enemy environments lately while losing four of the last five, including a 5-4 setback in Edmonton.
My Stars vs. Oilers prediction and player props explore the home team’s chances without two of the league’s best players.
Here are my best Stars vs. Oilers predictions and player props for tonight’s NHL matchup, with my pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale. Be sure to check out the rest of our NHL picks along with our guide on how to bet on NHL.
As of 9 a.m. ET, the Stars are the -154 moneyline favorites to beat the underdog Oilers (+128) in tonight’s matchup at 10 p.m. ET from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alta. I predict the Stars will win in a game with six or fewer goals.
Here are the latest Stars vs. Oilers odds and betting lines from our best live betting sites.
Tonight’s game will play out one of two ways. The first will include the Oilers struggling to cope without McDavid and Draisaitl. The second would feature Kris Knoblauch’s team banding together while becoming defiant and hellbent on proving it can manage when Batman and Robin are on the treatment table.
I’m opting for the latter.
While the Stars should leave Alberta’s capital with two points, I think the Oilers will hold firm and keep the game tight through a resilient, all-hands-on-deck defensive approach.
The Oilers won 5-4 against Seattle in their first game without McDavid and Drasiaitl. But likening Seattle to Dallas is tantamount to comparing Disney World to a local amusement park in a rural town.
However, the next week provides an opportunity for each individual to step up while McDavid and Draisaitl recuperate and prepare for the only time of the season that matters to this current Oilers group.
Five of the last seven Oilers and Stars games have featured five goals or fewer. I expect another defensive slugfest, particularly with two of the world’s best offensive players inactive. I foresee the Stars leading 3-2 before potting an insurance marker to wrap things up.

There’s no need to offer Hintz as to why I chose Roope. He’s tallied 21 points in the last 12 games, the best points-per-game clip (1.75) since Feb. 23.
Only Jack Eichel has registered as many points as the sizzling Star in the last month. He failed to record at least one point in three of those 12 games. While Hintz didn’t score a point the last time the center faced the Oilers, he exploded for three in the previous meeting.

Duchene is enjoying a torrid offensive streak when it comes to points and shot production. While both props appeal, I decided to go with Duchene posting at least one point for various reasons, including his recent productive patch against the Oilers.
The 34-year-old is riding a five-game point streak, and he’s been on the scoresheet in eight of the last nine, including securing a helper in Edmonton a couple of weeks ago.
With three points in his last two games against the Oilers, Duchene checks all boxes for this prop. Most of our best sportsbooks offer -135 odds, implying a 57.45% probability.

Looking like the Nugent-Hopkins of old, the Oilers’ elder statesman has been taking the lead on the club while stepping up in the absence of McDavid and Draisaitl. He scored a hat trick against Seattle on Saturday and was the spark plug the Oilers desperately required.
He reached fifth gear a few games before Batman and Robin went down, with back-to-back three-point games against Utah and the New York Rangers.
He’ll be poised and ready to fire on sight after his hat-trick performance. Nugent-Hopkins hit the Over on this prop in five of the previous seven games, including the last three.
Here are the latest injuries for tonight’s Stars vs. Oilers matchup, which will update in real time.
