The Edmonton Oilers executed their third defensive masterclass in the last four games in Dallas for the Game 2 win. Can they make it a fourth in five when they host the Dallas Stars at Rogers Place in this afternoon’s Game 3 (3 p.m. ET, ABC)?
Our Stars vs. Oilers prediction and NHL picks analyze the chances of Edmonton continuing its momentum while capitalizing on home-ice advantage. They are the favorites across our best sports betting sites

✅ Against the spread pick: Stars +1.5 (-190 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐
✅ Moneyline pick: Oilers (-150 via bet365) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
✅ Over/Under pick: Over 6.5 goals (+104 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐
🎯 Score prediction: Oilers 4, Stars 3
Aside from the ferocious Florida Panthers, the only thing that can beat the Oilers is the Oilers themselves. Whenever Edmonton loses, you can be as sure as Connor McDavid posting a point that it’s due to individual errors.
The defending Western Conference champions were let down by indiscipline in Game 1, which the Stars took full advantage of with three power-play goals in just over six minutes, the time it takes for Corey Perry to get under someone’s skin.
The Oilers eradicated those mistakes in Game 2, resulting in their third shutout victory in the previous four games.
Those mistake-laden flurries are becoming less frequent as time passes. Kris Knoblauch has indoctrinated simplification, ensuring the Oilers are always responsible defensively.
Conceding just two even-strength goals (excluding the Game 1 empty-netter) in the last four games reflects just how attentive they are to details in their own zone. By the way, one of the two they allowed – Tyler Seguin’s first-period goal in Game 1 – was due to an individual error.
Go figure.
I rarely follow trends unless they’re of a more timely variety. The last six Oilers Game 3s had seven goals or more, five of which were at Rogers Place. Skinner wasn’t at his best in any of those contests. Add that trend to the peculiar 3 p.m. ET start time, and you have the two primary reasons I’m backing the Over.
✅ Best bet: Oilers ML (-150 via bet365)
