Wednesday’s NHL matchups feature more cross-conference action, with St. Louis Blues heading to Capital One Arena to take on Washington Capitals with hopes of climbing out of last place in the Central Division.
The two teams face off for the first time since February 2025, when the Blues saw out a comfortable 5-2 win at Capital One Arena.
St. Louis struggles with a current losing record at the bottom of the NHL Central Division with 10 points, although they did recently overcome a horrendous 7-game losing streak in their last showing with a 3-2 win over the Oilers.
The streak kicked off on October 23 with a 7-4 defeat to the Utah Mammoth, only to fall to the Red Wings twice in 6-4 and 5-2 results, the Penguins 7-3, the Canucks 4-3 in a shootout, and the Blue Jackets 3-2 on November 1.
They flipped their misfortunes around on November 3 with a 3-2 regulation win over the Oilers to hopefully lift their spirits as they take on Washington tonight.
On the other hand, the home team Capitals isn’t looking too fierce either, with the Metropolitan side sitting in 2nd-to-last place with just 13 points, as they currently are amidst a 4-game losing streak.
Mid-October was looking up to the mark for Washington, who fired off an impressive 6-1 record from October 11 to October 24, with their only loss coming from the Canucks in a 4-3 result on the 19th.
In their last 4 games, though, they’ve nosedived in points with a 7-1 defeat to the Senators, a 1-0 loss to the Stars, a 3-1 reverse at the hands of the Islanders and a 4-3 shootout defeat to the Sabres in their most recent game.
A win for either side will be crucial as both are desperate for points and, with St. Louis’s questionable goal differential, you can expect there to be goals.
Looking at the Capitals’ current record appears daunting at first, but they’ve still scored more goals (31) this season than they’ve allowed (29).
While they’re tied for the least amount of goals scored in the NHL, they’ve actually allowed the least amount of goals as well, while St. Louis is tied for the most goals allowed in the NHL with 53.
Washington hasn’t failed to score at home yet, and they’ve netted 26 goals in their last 10 games, which for a -1.5 puck line at +160 against the worst defensive team in the NHL this season doesn’t seem too bad.
Once thing is for certain and that’s that both teams have had trouble scoring throughout the season, although St. Louis has found much better goal-scoring success with 37 goals to Washington’s 29.
Two out of 3 of the last games for both sides concluded with under 6.0 goals, so Under 6.0 at -100 here seems probable.
A -1.5 puck line at +160 also looks achievable for the home side, even without many goals being scored, while the Capitals skate in at -150 to win after 60 minutes.
While the Capitals have had their team difficulties, talented center Dylan Strome has 3 goals to his name already this season with 8 assists and is likely to set up the likes of Tom Wilson (6 goals and 7 assists) or Aliaksei Protas (5 goals and 5 assists) at -110.
The Blues don’t have too many standouts, but center Pius Suter leads his team with 5 goals and 3 assists, along with teammates Jordan Kryou and Jimmy Snuggerud, each with 4 goals and 4 assists apiece.
