Sharks Continue To Struggle On Offense

The San Jose Sharks are heading to Utah after their loss on Tuesday against the Vegas Golden Knights with a final score of 4-2. This would be the ninth loss for the Sharks in their last eleven games. The Sharks just wrapped up a six-game home stand with a record ending in 2-4-0.

San Jose’s offense has not done well this season ranking 25th overall in scoring, averaging 2.60 goals per game. However this number has dropped in their more recent games as they have averaged 2.10 goals per game in their last ten games and 1.60 in their last five. Their lack of goal scoring may be a result of a key player being out of the lineup. Defenseman Jake Walman has played great this season with a +6 plus/minus and sitting third overall on the team in assists at 20 assists on the year. They have missed Walman and will not have him return in this game as he did not make the trip out to Utah with the team. This will be the eight consecutive game missed for Walman. It is yet to be seen if Fabian Zetterlund will play as he is a game time decision but the Sharks would be hurt more on offense without him as he is their fourth best goal scorer having eleven goals in 43 games played.

We will likely see Alexandar Georgiev get the start in net on Friday against Utah. Alexandar Georgiev has a record of 9-12-0 in 24 games with a goals against average of 3.53 and a save percentage of .876 this season. Georgiev was 38-18-5 in 63 games with a goals against average of 3.02 and a save percentage of .897 in 2023-24.

Injuries Still Plague Utah’s Defense

The Utah Hockey Club are coming off a loss on Wednesday against the Florida Panthers with a final score of 4-1. This would be the seventh loss for the Hockey Club in their last eight games. Utah is currently on a long seven-game home stand that started with a 0-1-0 record following their loss to Florida.

Utah on the season has done well defensively but this has largely been thanks to their goaltending which ranks 13th overall in save percentage at .896. The Utah defense has been allowing a decent amount of shots through however averaging 28.93 shots per game. This number however has shot up to them allowing 31.88 shots per game in their last eight games. The reason for this I believe is their injuries to the blue line. While none of their star defenseman are injured their bottom line has been crippled. With injuries to Robert Bortuzzo and Maveric Lamoureux we have seen Utah have to dip into their reserves for any defending and as the shots have shown, it has not been enough. The Utah Hockey Club have 3.75 goals against per game played in their last 8 games but are only scoring 2.25.

Karel Vejmelka will likely get the start in net for the Hockey Club on Friday. Vejmelka has a 9-11-3 record in 25 games with a goals against average of 2.43 and a save percentage of .915 this season. Karel Vejmelka was 13-19-2 in 38 games with a goals against average of 3.35 and a save percentage of .895 in 2023-24.

Insiders Status:

The Utah Hockey Club are 3-7 against the puck line as favorites in their last 10 games. The San Jose Sharks have a 7-3 record against the puck line as underdogs in their last 10 games on the road. Prior to the Utah Hockey Club moving to Salt Lake City, Alexandar Georgiev has a record of 5-1-3 in his career against the Arizona Coyotes with a goals against average of 2.80 and a save percentage of .895. I believe the line is too favored for a Utah team having so many issues on their blue line. Because of this I have to side with San Jose to cover their puck line.
I am taking San Jose at +1.5.

Insiders Status:

The Utah Hockey Club and San Jose Sharks both have an over/under record of 3-7 in their last 10 games. While their last two meetings this season have gone over the total this will be the first time Utah will face the Sharks with Alexandar Georgiev in net. Georgiev should add that defensive boost to keep this a much lower scoring game. If Utah is unable to find the back of the net consistently than the total will be largely controlled by the Sharks who have had some scoring problems as of late. With this in mind I have to look toward the under.
I am siding with the under at 6.
