Not too long ago in late November the Ottawa Senators owned the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference. Spirits reached such a low that there were rumors of captain Brady Tkachuk getting traded.
Now that feels like a distant memory, as the Senators have won eight of their last 11 matchups and four straight, putting them into a wild-card position again.
Ottawa’s next challenge is a road clash with the Calgary Flames, which takes place at Scotiabank Saddledome (9 p.m. ET, ESPN+). The Flames are fresh off squandering a two-goal lead during the third period against the Boston Bruins. Calgary has also dropped two of its last three outings at home after taking six of seven.
My Senators vs. Flames prediction focuses partly on Josh Norris.

Josh Norris has hit a groove regarding his shot production. The 25-year-old hit the Over on this prop in the last four games and six of seven. He’s playing on the first line with Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson and getting the second-most ice time of the forwards.
Norris attempted 13 shots in the last two games against Seattle and Pittsburgh and fired at least three on goal in four of the previous five contests against the Flames.
He had three shots against Calgary the last time these two teams met in Ottawa on Nov. 25 and faces a favorable matchup at the Saddledome, where the Flames concede the fifth-most shots (30.2).
The Senators, meanwhile, are tied with the Dallas Stars and New York Rangers for the eighth-most shots per game in enemy rinks (29.1). The plus-money odds add extra appeal, as a $10 winning bet will profit $13.

I backed the Under 5.5 goals in Calgary’s last game, too. However, that backfired when the Flames allowed two third-period goals.
I don’t love the 5.5 benchmark, but the odds for 6.5 (-180) are too steep. Ottawa’s recent hot run is due to its sound defensive play, largely thanks to Linus Ullmark playing at the level the Sens expected when they traded for him.
Ullmark has won his last six starts, allowing just five goals while securing two shutouts. Five of the previous seven Senators’ contests had five or fewer goals.
There’s been mild movement on the moneyline, with the Senators still favored but going from about -133 to -128.
