When Brighton beat Northville 2-0 to win the first KLAA championship hockey game in 2009, Bulldogs coach Paul Moggach sensed the historical significance.
“When there’s a list of KLAA champions, we’ll be first, and we’re proud of that.” Moggach said.
Sophomore goalie Eric Lipon was the hero in that game, turning aside all 33 Northville shots while the Bulldogs managed only 12 shots on net.
The latest hero was Howell senior Luke Storm, whose overtime goal on Thursday, Feb. 5 made the Highlanders the 18th KLAA champion with a 4-3 victory over Livonia Stevenson.
It was only the second KLAA title for Howell, the other coming in 2011.
It means something to win the KLAA, given the fact the league has produced nine state champions and 13 state runners-up.
