The San Jose Sharks have one of the brightest futures in hockey thanks to a core centered around Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith and William Eklund. However, with the club still rebuilding, it appears one of their top veterans could be moved this offseason with a strong market of suitors eyeing him.
According to The Fourth Period, Sharks’ defenseman Mario Ferraro has interest from the Colorado Avalanche, Tampa Bay Lightning, Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Flames.

Mario Ferraro stats (2024-2025): 17 points (12 assists, 5 goals), 150 hits, 125 blocks, 37 takeaways in 78 games played
Ferraro, who turns 27 in September, does offer some experience to a young Sharks roster and plays a position where they are very thin. However, he’s entering the final year of his contract and San Jose might want to move him with a full season left on his deal before he walks in free agency.
A change of scenery could also benefit Ferraro, who hasn’t played in a single postseason game since making his NHL debut in 2019. A second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, trading him could net San Jose another pick it could potentially package to move up in the 2025 draft or it can add to its collection of future picks.

With the New York Islanders expected to take defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the No. 1 pick, trading Ferraro could open up a spot for Sharks’ top prospect Sam Dickinson to make his NHL debut next season. At the very least, he’d have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot in camp.
While Ferraro might not be one of the most in-demand defensemen available this summer, the level of interest in him and the Sharks’ ongoing rebuild suggests a deal could happen this offseason. Of his suitors named in NHL rumors, the Flames (7 picks) and Lightning (7 picks) have the most draft capital this year. Colorado has just one pick (fourth) inside the first four rounds, while Winnipeg has two (first and fourth).
