ALLEN PARK — It was not that long ago that Wyandotte Roosevelt housed the hottest ice hockey team in the entire Downriver area.
In what could have been a potential trap game against a longtime local rival, it was instead a get-right game of sorts for the Bears, who recaptured their winning ways with a dominant 9-1 win over the hometown Jags.
Tuesday was the long scheduled meeting of the season between the two programs. The win for Roosevelt now gives them three straight head-to-head wins over Allen Park over the last two campaigns. The nine goals also matches their third-highest scoring output in a game this winter.
It’s a welcomed signed for Bears head coach Aaron Robinson, who was pleased with how his team handled their business from start to finish.
“I think good teams find a way to make those games the way they are supposed to be,” Robinson said. “That’s what we’re trying to drive home to them, that we’re a good team. It’s staying the course and not letting games like these slip by us.”
Although it may not have properly reflected on the scoreboard right away, Roosevelt asserted themselves early and often against an Allen Park team that had lost seven consecutive games coming into play on Tuesday.
Despite outshooting the Jags 18-3 in the first period, the Bears settled for a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. It was an opening stanza in which the visitors, Robinson said, were able to tinker with some lineup changes.
The second period, though, is when Robinson’s bunch opened things up considerably. Highlighted by a 23-0 edge in shots on goal, Roosevelt poured in four more goals to take a 6-0 lead into the second intermission. Three of those four goals came in the span of just under three minutes of game action.
“In the first period, we tried some new things,” Robinson said. “We moved some players around in different positions to see what we can do. It didn’t work out how we wanted so we reverted back. It started to come back but it was good to see them stay on the attack and not break down.”
After Roosevelt potted one in the opening minute of the third, Allen Park avoided their 12th shutout loss of the season when Kaden Hamel scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season. That came with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation.
The Bears, though, later in the period ended the game with two goals in the span of 57 seconds.
Roosevelt on the night saw five different players find the back of the net and eight players tally multiple points. That includes junior and former all-state honoree Eli Harrell, whose hat trick helped him reach the 50-goal plateau for the season.
The Bears elsewhere got a pair of goals each from Owen Malinowski and Logan Stone, while Cameron Roe and Hunter Lopez each found the back of the net once.
“Scoring depth is huge for any team,” Robinson said. “We’ve done an alright job at that this season but we need to do better still. For the most part though, we’re starting to come along and see more guys score late in the season.”
Harrell, Roe, and Lopez each had two assists as well on the night for Roosevelt. Landon Hinson, Joey Ogden, and Ethan Ivity all recorded multi-point nights as that trio combined for nine assists.
The Bears as a team ended up firing 55 shots on net against Allen Park goaltender Colton Fisher.
Roosevelt (14-10-1) has just two games remaining, the first of which is on the road against Metro League West Division foe Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard on Friday, Feb 6. The Bears will then close out the regular season at home vs Ann Arbor Huron on Feb 11.
Robinson says their main point of emphasis between now and the state playoffs, which get underway on Feb 16, revolves around what he says is their bread and butter.
“We really just want to break down what we’re doing now and make it better,” Robinson said. “We can run a pretty strong forecheck at times. When we do that consistently, we can put some goals on the board. If we don’t, then we fall apart. So we want to focus on is cleaning that stuff up.”
Allen Park (4-18) still has four regular season games remaining after Tuesday. That stretch begins with their home finale on Feb 6 against Metro East Division foe Jackson Lumen Christi.
