RHINELANDER, Wis. (WJFW) — The Rhinelander Ice Association is sending three hockey teams to state tournaments.
Rhinelander skaters ages 8 through 14 are hoping to bring home trophies.
On February 8, the Rhinelander Squirt B team secured a 4-0 win over Antigo, securing their spot in the state tournament. Luke Ziolkowski, a winger for the Squirt B team recounted what the end of the game was like.
“As soon as the buzzer went off during the tournament game, I jumped over the boards and threw my stick in the air and jumped in the pile with my friends,” Ziolkowski said.
Along with the Squirt B team, the Peewee B team and Bantam team also are headed to state. Bantam head coach, Jed Peters said the local interest in hockey has rose recently.
“An association like ours, we’ve seen just explosive growth over the last several years, and that would just not be possible without the support from the community and the parents,” Peters said.
Randy Ostrom, the Hockey Director for the Rhinelander Ice Association said players and parents show tremendous dedication.
“This is huge for our program,” Ostrom said. “It’s a real testament to the dedication that these kids have put in, the time their parents have put in, the money their parents have invested in them. The time down here at the rink, late nights, early mornings, driving the kids around, it’s a great way to finish this season and showcase all the time that they’ve put into this season.”
Squirt B will be playing against Hayward on Saturday, February 28tin Merrill, the Bantam team will play Antigo at the Waupun Ice Arena this coming Saturday and then on March 7th, the Peewee B team will go against West Salem at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
