Red Wings fall in Vegas
The Red Wings dropped their second straight game when they fell to the Golden Knights 6-3 in Las Vegas over the weekend. Detroit did not have an answer for Vegas center Tomas Hertl, who produced his second hat trick of the month. RW Patrick Kane scored and dished out two assists in the loss. Detroit’s playoff chances are waning, falling to five points behind the Canadiens for the final wild-card spot in the East. Detroit’s offense has stumbled recently, failing to exceed three goals in 11 of their previous 12 contests.
Detroit coach Todd McLellan on the loss to the Golden Knights:
“We have to be honest with each other. We were, again tonight, between periods. We talk about wanting to be in the playoffs, but we’re not sure we always want to be in shooting lanes. We’re not sure we want to do some things, and I’m not saying everybody. Do we really want to do it around the net? Do we really want to get hit by a puck? Do we want to do the board work when it’s hard? If the answer is yes to that from everybody, then we have a chance. If the answer is yes to those questions from 85 percent of the players, we don’t.”
Key injuries: LW Elmer Soderblom and defenseman Erik Gustafsson are both out with injuries.
Hockey Club score six against Tampa Bay
The Hockey Club won their second straight game over the weekend when they took down the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-4 at home. Logan Cooley and Alexander Kerfoot each knocked two pucks into the back of the net for the Hockey Club. Before the game, Tampa Bay had allowed only 2.66 goals per game.
Utah has produced a point in 12 of its prior 14 games at home. Utah’s offense has been clicking recently, exceeding five goals in their previous two contests. The Hockey Club is now four points behind the Blues for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Key injuries: Center Tij Iginla is out with an injury.
Insiders Status:
The Red Wings have excelled versus Western Conference opponents this season, winning at a 55.6% clip. The Hockey Club lost seven straight against the East earlier this year and has lost two of its previous three games. Utah has not had a home-ice advantage in its inaugural season, winning under 40% of its games played in front of its fans.
The Red Wings have been a solid bet this season, winning 40 of their 68 games against the spread, while Utah has produced a losing record ATS. Utah skaters rank in the bottom half of the league in multiple categories, including average goals scored per game with 2.83, so the odds they put up a significant number of points on the board against Detroit are low. The stats and trends strongly support a comfortable victory for the Red Wings on the road on Monday.
Take Detroit.
Insiders Status:
The previous matchup between these squads played at the Delta Center went under the goal total, with only six pucks reaching the back of the net. Utah held Detroit’s offense to just two goals. The Red Wings have pushed or gone under the goal total in three of their previous four games overall and three of four on the road. They blanked the Golden Knights last week.
Utah ranks in the bottom half of the NHL in scoring, so the odds the Hockey Club scores quickly in bunches or adds a significant number of points to the scoreboard against the Detroit defense are low. Most signs point to a lower-scoring affair in Utah on Monday.
Take the under.
