The New Jersey Devils will look to get back to winning ways ahead of the NHL playoffs, after winning just nine of their last 20 regular-season contests. The Devils cap off an up-and-down campaign against the Detroit Red Wings tonight from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., at 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT).
Our Red Wings vs. Devils prediction and NHL picks expect a Detroit victory with loose defending on the menu, leading to at least six combined goals from the sides.
Neither team has anything to play for aside from those looking to make a name for themselves in the NHL. New Jersey will likely rest a bunch of key players, and we don’t expect either team to put their bodies on the line in the defensive zone either.

You can’t even call this a dress rehearsal for the postseason, with the Devils set to rest several key players. Head coach Sheldon Keefe hasn’t announced his lineup for the season finale, but I don’t require inside information to ascertain the likelihood of an altered Devils lineup.
There’s nothing more the Devils can do other than hope they, or netminder Jacob Markstrom, get hot in the playoffs. It’s the only way I can see them beating the Carolina Hurricanes, which I discussed more in the Stanley Cup odds and Round 1 matchups.
The Red Wings have played some pretty good hockey recently, which occurs naturally when there’s nothing left to play for. There was one passage in their last game against the Dallas Stars, which they won 6-4, epitomizing on-ice action when two teams meet with nothing on the line.
Patrick Kane barely took a step in coverage, gliding and going through the motions. He barely attempted a stick check. Aside from those using the game as a tryout of sorts, that’s the type of defense I expect at Prudential Center tonight.
It’s why I’m putting money on the Over. It’s one of the last games of pond hockey we’ll see before players start sacrificing life and limb for a chance to lift the Holy Grail. And with the Devils playing two games in just over 24 hours, I’m favoring the Red Wings to end the season with a win.

Red Wings fans will wonder where this consistent version of Kane has been all season. The legendary American has been ripping it up lately, scoring at least one point in five of the last six games, but I’m going with his shot prop for this one for two reasons. First, the plus-money +110 odds at BetMGM would profit $11.
Second, Kane fired at least three shots on goal in seven of the previous eight meetings with the Devils, including the last four. He’s notched at least three shots in two of the last three overall. The meaningless game should also provide the pond-hockey-like environment in which Kane thrives.

There’s a slightly higher probability DeBrincat will light the lamp than set up a teammate with 37 goals to 31 assists this year. In a perfect world, I’d back him to notch at least one point. Unfortunately, the -160 odds are too long, so I’m banking on him securing at least one helper.
I picked that over his goals prop because he has an assist in each of the last four meetings with the Devils. At +150 odds, a winning $10 bet at BetMGM would profit $15.

Hughes should play – that’s first and foremost. However, Keefe may decide to rest him to ensure he doesn’t lose both Hughes brothers for the playoffs. If he does play, I expect him to get a helper. Hughes broke his three-game non-assist streak in Boston on Tuesday, posting two.
He has eight assists in the last eight games while notching one in each of the previous two versus the Red Wings. A winning $10 bet at BetMGM, which offers +110 odds, would yield an $11 profit.
