The New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes enter today’s game at Lenovo Center (3 p.m. ET, ABC) with opposing mindsets as one side prepares for the playoffs while the other prepares a postseason tee time.
The Hurricanes played well during the first and third periods in Washington D.C., but a woeful middle frame – in which they allowed three unanswered goals – undid their efforts.

The Rangers finally released their billowing frustration against the New York Islanders on Thursday, exploding for nine goals during a 9-2 win. While that’s an impressive goal haul, I don’t expect the Rangers to extend that prolific form into this afternoon’s contest. With three meaningless games left, there isn’t much to keep the Rangers motivated. 
There’s a chance they’ll play loose and free, repeating the pond hockey-like performance the team displayed at UBS Arena a couple of days ago. I’m not sold on that, as the Rangers aren’t playing a down-and-out Islanders team.
They’ve already released that built-up tension, and the team is facing a Hurricanes team focused on recapturing its best form after losing four straight.
It’s the first time Carolina has lost four consecutive games all season, coming on the back of a league-best 12-2-0 stretch. Additionally, all four Hurricanes losses during their current skid came on the road. 
Only two teams (the Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets) have produced superior home records, and I expect the Hurricanes to make it nine straight during the last 10 at Lenovo Center.

While I don’t expect the Rangers to produce much offense this afternoon, Miller’s shot total is too good to pass up. He’s hit the Over in four of the last five games while eclipsing the three-shot mark in five of the previous six against the Hurricanes, including three straight at Lenovo Center.

Aho got off the snide against the Caps, registering his first assist in four games. It was only the third time he went three contests this season without an assist.
