The Blue Ridge Bobcats fell behind early and never recovered in suffering a 5-2 loss to the Carolina Thunderbirds on Friday night in Game 1 of the Federal Prospects Hockey League Continental Division quarterfinal series at the Hitachi Energy Arena in Wytheville, Virginia.
A crowd of 2,407 fans showed up for the contest in Southwest Virginia, but the drama disappeared quickly as the Thunderbirds scored three times in the first period.
Kalib “Gus” Ford scored two of those goals for top-seeded Carolina.
Denis Radchenko scored in the second period for the fourth-seeded Bobcats, while Justin Daly found the back of the net in the third period for the home team.
The second contest in the best-of-three series is today at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Arena with a start time of 7:30 p.m.
