Since the end of the 4 Nations break, Pittsburgh has been proving repeatedly why penguins cannot fly. The Pens have lost eight of their last nine games entering this afternoon’s contest against the Minnesota Wild (3:30 p.m. ET, TNT). 
The Wild have also been floundering lately, largely due to key injuries to Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek. They’ve lost four of the previous six games but are the clear -135 favorites when the reeling Pens waddle into Excel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. 
Our Penguins vs. Wild prediction, picks, and player props expect a low-scoring affair between struggling offenses while featuring Matt Boldy, Rickard Rakell, and Sidney Crosby.

As of 9:30 a.m. ET, the Wild are the -135 moneyline favorites to beat the Penguins in today’s NHL matchup at 3:30 p.m. from Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. I’m predicting the Wild beat the Penguins in a game with six goals or fewer.

This matchup comes with all the makings of a rugged defensive battle. The Wild’s offense has become one of the most anemic since Kaprizov and Eriksson Ek suffered injuries. The Wild have scored the eighth-fewest goals per game on home ice (2.75) since Karpizov went down on Jan. 26. 
That output decreased after Eriksson Ek’s injury on Feb. 22. The Wild are tied for the third-fewest goals per game (1.83) in their six contests without Eriksson Ek and Kaprizov. 
For reasons of self-preservation and out of necessity, Minnesota’s defense has improved markedly without Kaprizov, allowing the fifth-fewest goals per game at home since Jan. 26 (1.75). 
The team’s toothless attack and miserable defense are two of three factors contributing to this perfect storm. The third lies with the Penguins, who are tied for the fewest goals per game (2.25) in their 16 contests since Jan. 23. I can’t see either team breaking this one open, which is why I’m backing the Wild to beat the Penguins 3-2. 
I’ve locked in the total on six goals to provide a buffer for a potential empty-netter.

With Kaprizov and Eriksson Ek out, the need for Boldy to produce offensively has dramatically increased. He’s doing his utmost to keep the Wild afloat until they return to full strength. Boldy has logged an assist in six of his last eight games, living up to his end of the bargain. That’s 18% of his assists for the season during a stretch comprising just 13% of the games. 
The Pens’ defense has been subpar for most of the campaign, and I expect Boldy to take advantage while setting up a teammate at least once. FanDuel offers the most competitive price of our best sportsbooks.

Rakell has hit the Over on this prop in 10 of the last 13 games, including six of the previous eight.
While he’s not as productive at enemy rinks, Rakell faces a Wild team that allows the fourth-most shots per game on home ice (30.2). He’s one of the key cogs in Pittsburgh’s wheel, and Rakell fired five shots on goal the last time these teams met. 
His +105 odds at bet365 suggest a 48.78% implied probability, but the forward has hit the Over 77% of the time in his last 13 contests.

Sid the grown man is still racking up points despite his team’s abhorrent play.
He’s tallied 47 assists in 63 games, and Crosby has notched at least one helper in four of his last five outings. Going back further, Crosby has registered an assist in eight of the Penguins’ previous 11 games.
