Crosby became the 21sth player to reach the mark when scored in the second period of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 6-1 loss to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday night.

Jayden Maiava passed for 221 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown to Ja’Kobi Lane midway through the fourth quarter, and Southern California rallied for a 19-13 victory over UCLA Saturday night at the Rose Bowl in the 94th edition of the Crosstown Showdown. Woody Marks rushed for 76 yards and Michael Lantz kicked four field goals as the Trojans became bowl eligible with the victory. It is the fifth straight year the road team has won in the series. The Trojans have won 19 of the last 26 meetings. Ethan Garbers was 20 of 29 for 265 yards for the Bruins. J.Michael Sturdivant had five receptions for 117 yards and T.J. Harden rushed for 98 yards.
Max Verstappen cruised to a fourth consecutive Formula 1 championship Saturday night by finishing fifth in the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Verstappen needed only to finish ahead of Lando Norris of McLaren to give Red Bull a fourth straight driver championship. The Dutchman started fifth but was already up to second by the 10th lap around the street circuit that includes the famed Las Vegas Strip. Norris, who had to score at least three points more than Verstappen to extend the championship fight, finished sixth. Verstappen needed only to finish higher than Norris to win the title, which he did with two races remaining on the season.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matvei Michkov scored a power-play goal in overtime as the Flyers overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Saturday.
Scotty Pippen Jr. already had plenty of fond memories of watching his Hall of Fame father at the United Center. Pippen, son of former Bulls great Scottie, scored a career-best 30 points, added 10 assists and shot 13 of 16 to lead the Memphis Grizzlies past the Bulls, 142-131. The elder Pippen wasn’t in the building Saturday night but was in Memphis on Nov. 8 when his son finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Coach Taylor Jenkins said Pippen played “phenomenal.”
Carson Hansen ran for two touchdowns, including a 3-yard run with 1:31 left, to rally No. 22 Iowa State to a 31-28 victory over Utah. Rocco Becht threw for 256 yards and a touchdown to lead Iowa State, and Jayden Higgins paced the Cyclones with 155 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. Iowa State kept its hopes of reaching the Big 12 title game alive with a second straight win. Isaac Wilson led Utah with 74 yards on 8-of-8 passing before exiting with an injury late in the third quarter. Luke Bottari, who was fifth on the depth chart when the season started, finished the game and totaled 102 yards on offense.
Ashton Jeanty rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 12 Boise State to a 17-13 win over Wyoming on Saturday night and a berth in the Mountain West Conference title game. The Broncos (10-1 overall, 7-0) will play in the conference championship game for the seventh time in the eight seasons and kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive. Boise State finished the Mountain West unbeaten, extended its winning streak to nine games and beat Wyoming (2-9, 2-5) for the eighth straight time, dating to 2016.
Jeremiyah Love scored three touchdowns, tying a school record with his 11th straight game with a rushing TD, and No. 6 Notre Dame ended No. 18 Army’s 13-game winning streak with a 49-14 victory at Yankee Stadium. The sophomore had TD runs of 68 and 14 yards, finishing with 130 yards on seven carries, and leaped over a defender at the goal line to finish off a 6-yard scoring pass from Riley Leonard. Leonard threw for two TDs and Jadarian Price ran for two scores for the Irish, who won their ninth straight game.
Everett Hayes kicked a 55-yard field goal with 20 seconds left and Oregon State snapped a five-game losing streak with a 41-38 victory over No. 25 Washington State in what was essentially this season’s Pac-12 championship. Ben Gulbranson, who missed last week’s loss at Air Force, threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Beavers (5-6). Trent Walker Jr. caught 12 passes for 136 yards. It was the second straight loss for the Cougars (8-3), who were coming off a 38-35 loss last weekend to New Mexico that dashed the Cougars’ hopes of possibly earning an at-large bid to the 12-team College Football Playoff.

PITTSBURGH — It has been a miserable start to the season for the Penguins, but Sidney Crosby gave his team something to smile about Saturday when he scored his 600th NHL goal.
Christian Veilleux threw three touchdown passes to Dorian Fleming, Freddie Brock ran for three TDs and Georgia State scored 31 consecutive points to beat Texas State 52-44 and snap a seven-game losing streak. Georgia State (3-8, 1-6 Sun Belt Conference) won for the first time since it beat Vanderbilt 36-32 on Sept. 14. Kenyatta Watson intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards to the 8 to set up an 11-yard TD catch by Fleming that gave the Panthers the lead for good at 21-14 with 1:14 left in the first half. K.D. McDaniel’s strip-sack of McCloud was recovered by Christian Lorenzo at the Texas State 39 and Braeden McAlister kicked a 52-yard field goal as time expired to make it 31-14 at halftime.
Sidney Crosby became the 21st player in NHL history to score 600 goals when he reached the mark in the second period against the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday night. Crosby got his 600th with 10 seconds left on a 5-on-3 power play. The Penguins’ bench emptied following Crosby’s goal, which was also his first against Utah. Crosby finished a one-timer from the right side of the net, set up by a pass from Erik Karlsson at 3:11 of the second. After the goal was announced, the crowd gave Crosby a standing ovation and the Penguins’ captain acknowledged the fans and raised his stick in the air. Crosby and Alex Ovechkin are the only active players to have scored at least 600 goals in the NHL.
Jake DeBrusk had two goals and an assist, and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Ottawa Senators 4-3. Kiefer Sherwood had a goal and an assist for Vancouver in the opener of a six-game trip. Teddy Blueger also scored, and Elias Pettersson had two assists. Canucks goaltender Kevin Lankinen stopped 26 shots. Ottawa lost its fifth consecutive game. Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist. Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle also scored.

Scotty Pippen Jr. had a career-best 30 points with 10 assists to lead the Memphis Grizzlies past the Chicago Bulls 142-131. Jaylen Wells added 26 points as Memphis won its second straight. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 23 points, and Santi Aldama added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which led 64-60 at halftime and outrebounded the Bulls 49-35. The Bulls fell despite 29 points from Zach LaVine and 26 from Nikola Vucevic.

Jack Layne threw threw touchdown passes, Nate Thomas had 171 yards rushing and Idaho beat Idaho State 40-17 in the regular season finale for both teams. Layne threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Emmerson Cortez-Menjivar on a trick play that opened the scoring about 6 minutes into the game and his 15-yard TD pass to Mark Hamper with 37 seconds left in the second quarter gave Idaho (9-3, 6-2 Big Sky Conference) a 10-point halftime lead. Andrew Marshall returned the opening kickoff of the second half 100 yards for a touchdown. Kobe Tracy was 27-of-44 passing for 249 yards with three interceptions for Idaho State (5-7, 3-5) and ran for a 3-yard TD in the fourth quarter that made it 30-17.
Kyle Palmieri scored twice, Brock Nelson had a goal and two assists and the New York Islanders beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 to end a three-game skid. Ilya Sorokin stopped 24 shots and got his 100th career victory for the Islanders. Jake Neighbours scored for St. Louis and Jordan Binnington made 28 saves in the Blues’ third loss in four games.
The Vegas Golden Knights exploded for five unanswered goals in the second period to roll over the Montreal Canadiens 6-2 on Saturday night. Tomas Hertl, Callahan Burke, Ivan Barbashev, Tanner Pearson and Keegan Kolesar each scored. Montreal’s Emil Heineman and Jayden Struble scored in the third before Golden Knights’ Jack Eichel collected his seventh of the season. Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill stopped 15 of 17 shots. Montreal’s Sam Montembeault gave up five goals on 25 shots before he was replaced in the third period by Cayden Primeau, who turned away two of three shots.
Kirill Marchenko tied it late in the third period with his second goal of the game, Sean Monahan had the only score in a shootout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4. Dmitri Voronkov had a goal and Dante Fabbro also scored for Columbus. Elvis Merzlikins made 32 saves, including stopping all three shots he faced in the shootout to help the Blue Jackets get their third straight win for the first time since March 11-16, 2022. Sebastian Aho had a goal and an assist, and Jack Roslovic, Jalen Chatfield, and Jackson Blake also scored for Carolina, which dropped a point behind first-place New Jersey in the Metropolitan Division. Pyotr Kochetkov made 27 saves before leaving the game with two minutes left in overtime. Spencer Martin made one save in relief.
Kobe Muasau had three total touchdowns, Jason Collins Jr. ran for two scores and Morgan State defeated Howard 35-21. Howard took an early 7-0 lead before Morgan State ran off five consecutive touchdowns to lead 35-7 heading to the fourth quarter. Muasau got the Bears on the board with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Myles Miree to make it 7-7 after one quarter. In a 28-point second quarter, Collins ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run and Muasau had a 7-yard TD pass to Marque Phillip for a 21-7 lead. Muasau’s 1-yard touchdown run made it 28-7 and a short TD run by Collins made it 35-7.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hannah Hidalgo scored 24 points and No. 6 Notre Dame defeated JuJu Watkins and third-ranked Southern California 74-61 on Saturday in a marquee matchup on the West Coast.
Dedan Thomas Jr. scored 22 points and UNLV beat New Mexico State 72-65.
Roman Josi scored twice and Jonathan Marchessault scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Nashville Predators to a 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night. Steven Stamkos also scored and Juuse Saros made 22 saves for the Predators, winners of two of three. Adam Lowry scored and Eric Comrie made 32 saves for Winnipeg, which had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Sidney Crosby scored his 600th NHL goal for Pittsburgh but the Penguins lost 6-1 to the Utah Hockey Club. Dylan Guenther scored twice, while Nick Bjugstad, Jack McBain, Mikhail Sergachev and Alexander Kerfoot also scored for Utah. Karel Vejmelka stopped 27 shots for Utah. Crosby is the 21st player in NHL history to score 600 goals. He reached the milestone with 10 seconds left on a five-on-three power play and now has seven goals in his last 12 games. Crosby finished a one-timer from the right side of the net, set up on a pass from Erik Karlsson at 3:11 of the second period.
Brad Marchand’s goal midway through the third period proved to be the winner and the Boston Bruins won their second straight game under interim coach Joe Sacco, beating the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 Saturday night. Justin Brazeau scored a power-play goal for Boston and Jeremy Swayman made 19 saves. Lucas Raymond scored for the Red Wings, who have lost four of their last five games. Cam Talbot stopped 27 shots.
Franz Wagner had 30 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, and the Orlando Magic beat the Detroit Pistons 111-100 for their eighth win in nine games. Wagner, who has scored 30 or more points in five of his last seven games, sat out the fourth quarter while the Magic’s bench stretched Orlando’s lead to 22 with 7:19 remaining. Jaden Ivey led the Pistons with 19 points and seven rebounds. Malik Beasley, starting in place of the injured Cade Cunningham, added 18 points.
Matt Duchene and Roope Hintz scored in the third period, and the Dallas Stars beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2. Jake Oettinger stopped 27 shots while improving to 11-3 on the season. Anthony Cirelli scored twice for Tampa Bay, which had a five-game point streak. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 24 saves. The Lightning had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first period but Dallas answered both times on goals from Evgenii Dadonov and Miro Heiskanen.
If only Pat Williams were still alive.
CJ Hines had 24 points to help Alabama State fend off Lamar 77-75 in the Akron Basketball Classic.
Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more to lift the Razorbacks to bowl eligibility with a 35-14 win over Louisiana Tech. It’s the fourth time Arkansas has reached such a status in coach Sam Pittman’s five seasons. Green ultimately threw for 221 yards and ran for 61. Both of his touchdowns were caught by Isaac TeSlaa who played in his final home game. Evan Bullock threw two touchdown passes to provide all of Louisiana Tech’s scoring.
Miles Hastings threw three touchdown passes for UC Davis, but it was Lan Larinson’s 59-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter that helped the Aggies hold off Sacramento State 42-39 in a regular-season finale. The Aggies (10-2, 7-1 Big Sky Conference), ranked No. 5 in the FCS coaches poll and awaiting an at-large bid to the playoffs, survived an upset effort by the Hornets (3-9, 1-7) and another letdown after getting within a two-point conversion of forcing overtime in a 30-28 loss to undefeated No. 2 Montana State with the conference championship on the line last Saturday.
Thad Franklin Jr. ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns, Kelvin Dean added 103 yards rushing and a score and Florida A&M beat Bethune-Cookman 41-38. Franklin carried the ball 26 times and Dean finished with 14 carries that included a 11-yard touchdown run to make it 41-31 with 2:23 left. Dennis Palmer ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns on 37 rushes for the Wildcats (2-10, 2-6).
Drew Allar passed for 244 yards and a touchdown, rushed for a score and completed a late fourth-down conversion to help No. 4 Penn State fend off Minnesota 26-25 and stay on track for a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions are 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten. Tyler Warren had eight receptions for 102 yards as Penn State kept alive a slim conference title hope. Nick Singleton’s 12-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter gave the Nittany Lions their first lead at 23-22. Penn State converted three fourth downs on its final drive.
Gavin Rutherford threw for two first-half touchdowns and Qualan Jones ran for two more in the third quarter to help power Stephen F. Austin to a 32-19 win over Abilene Christian in a nonconference season finale. The loss snapped the four-game win streak that had cemented the United Athletic Conference championship and an FCS playoff berth for Abilene Christian (8-4, 7-1). The Lumberjacks (7-5, 4-3) finished the season in third place in the Southland Conference behind Incarnate Word and Southeast Louisiana.
The Columbia Lions defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves 82-63 on Saturday night led by Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa’s 37 points. The Lions are now 7-0 with the win and the Seawolves dropped to 2-4.
Richie Munoz threw for a touchdown, David Godley ran for another — both in the fourth quarter — and Weber State rallied to defeat Cal Poly 28-17. Held to four field goals by Kyle Thompson through three quarters, the Wildcats trailed 17-12 early in the final period. Munoz then threw 17 yards to Jacob Sharp to go ahead 18-17. The two-point conversion try failed. Five minutes later, Godley’s 25-yard run made it 25-17 and Thompson added his fifth field goal for the final score. Munoz threw for 191 yards and Adrian Cormier had 138 yards rushing for the Wildcats.
Lanie Grant scored a career-high 15 points, Alyssa Ustby had a double-double and No. 16 North Carolina beat Ball State 63-52 in the Battle 4 Atlantis. North Carolina (4-1) scored the last nine points of the first quarter for a 19-10 advantage and led the rest of the way. Madelyn Bischoff’s 3-pointer pulled Ball State to 39-34 with 7:31 left in the third, but the Cardinals didn’t get closer. Ustby scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and her board with 6:58 left was the 1,000th of her career. Bischoff made five 3s and scored 19 points to lead Ball State (4-1).
