The Yorktown High School ice-hockey club team lost its first game of the season recently to Stone Bridge, 5-4, in what was a hard-fought, penalty-filled match.
Despite the loss, Yorktown remained tied atop the Smythe Division of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League with a 2-1 record.
Yorktown took a 1-0 lead when Henry Dwyer fired a shot that found the back of the net. Less than a minute later, the Stone Bridge goalie could not control the rebound on a shot from Bennett Haas, and Roger Allenbaugh was there to tap in the loose puck and Yorktown went up 2-0.
But Yorktown would have trouble staying out of the penalty box, and Stone Bridge scored four unanswered goals to lead 4-2 after two periods.
Despite being down a skater multiple times in the third period as a result of penalties, Yorktown battled back. Allenbuagh scored his second goal, slipping a loose puck past the Stone Bridge goalie.
Penalties again hurt Yorktown when Stone Bridge added another power-play goal late in the third period to go up 5-3.
Allenbaugh tallied a hat trick with a goal in the third period to bring Yorktown within one. With its goalie pulled, Yorktown put heavy pressure on Stone Bridge for the last two minutes of the third period, but could not find the back of the net to tie the score.
Yorktown’s goals came on assists from Haas, Dwyer, McGraw, Jamie Hardie and Alex Olsen. Yorktown goalie Brendan Thompson made several big stops to keep the match within reach. He made 26 saves.
The rest of the Yorktown lineup included Matthew Hamrick, William O’Sullivan, Andrew Levine, Benson Kluger, Will Schryver, Peyton Tien, John Chistolini, Matthew Herzfeld and Nate Lowenstein.
Yorktown plays next against Tuscarora on Friday (Dec. 13) at 9:20 p.m. at the Ion Arena & Ion International Training Center in Leesburg.
