The Edmonton Oilers completed their seventh comeback of these playoffs in the opener against the Florida Panthers, overcoming a two-goal deficit to snag an overtime win. Tonight’s Game 2 gets underway at 8 p.m. ET from Rogers Place (TNT) as the hosts look to take a 2-0 series lead.

While the sun has barely risen on the Stanley Cup Final, the Oilers feel more like the team of destiny with every passing contest. Throughout the postseason, they’ve snapped multiple impressive longstanding streaks, which continued in the opener. The Panthers were 31-0 under Paul Maurice’s stewardship in the postseason when leading after one or two periods.
Edmonton did what they do, snapping that ludicrous three-year unbeaten run.
It’s the sort of feat that might not be remembered in the annals of NHL lore, but it certainly will be in the dressing room and among the fanbase. If they win the Cup, that is.
Championship teams rise to the occasion at opportune moments, which is precisely what the Oilers did in Game 1. Courtesy of Connor McDavid, they got a goal from Mattias Ekholm in his second game back from injury.
They also received a crucial goal from Viktor Arvidsson, a secondary scoring source, something that has occurred this postseason more than wild, R-rated spring breaks in Florida.
And then there’s the overtime goal, scored by Leon Draisaitl, one megastar who received the biscuit from another hockey demigod, McDavid. You might have noticed the latter also set up Ekholm for Edmonton’s second. That’s too much to cope with, even for the defending Cup champs, especially in a raucous atmosphere in which the Oilers are 7-1.

Perry scored in Games 4 and 5 against the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final and looked as dangerous, if not more so, in Game 1 against the Cats. He was an omnipresent force, throwing his body around with reckless abandon.

I’m going back to the well after backing McDavid to score in the opener. He created bundles of chances and came within an inch of lifting it over Sergei Bobrovsky’s shoulder on a crafty backhander. He had four shots on goal to go along with his two helpers, and I expect McDavid to light the lamp before the Oilers head to Sunrise, Fla.
