The Edmonton Oilers continue their quest for history when they visit the Florida Panthers for Game 5 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday. After losing the first three games in its first appearance in the championship round since 2006, Edmonton staved off elimination with a thorough 8-1 victory in Saturday’s Game 4. The Oilers, who lost all five of the previous postseason matchups in which they lost the first three contests, hope to extend the series again as they look to become the fifth team in NHL playoff history to overcome an 0-3 deficit and join the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs as the only clubs to accomplish the feat in the Stanley Cup Final. Florida, which is seeking its first championship since joining the league in 1993-94, won each of the four previous series in which it took a 3-0 lead.

After being limited to just two goals over the first eight periods of the series, Edmonton finally has rediscovered its scoring touch. The Oilers have netted at least two tallies in each of the last four sessions and matched the franchise playoff record for most in one contest with their eruption in Game 4. Superstar Connor McDavid has been a major part of the team’s offensive resurgence, posting back-to-back multi-point performances after recording just one assist in the first two games of the Final.
The 27-year-old McDavid is the playoff leader with 38 points and is on the verge of joining legends Wayne Gretzky (three times) and Mario Lemieux as the only players in history to register at least 40 points in one postseason. A three-time Hart Trophy and five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, McDavid notched three assists on Saturday to increase his total to 32 and break the record set in 1988 by Gretzky (31). Most of the Oilers’ production in the series has come from its role players and defensemen, who have recorded 10 of the team’s 12 goals.
