The Florida Panthers dominated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-1 to win Game 5 Wednesday night and take a 3-2 series lead. Florida opened the scoring in the first period with an Aaron Ekblad goal. It didn’t stop there. Dmitry Kulikov, Jesper Boqvist, A.J. Greer, Niko Mikkola and Sam Bennett all added goals as the defending champs thumped Toronto on the road.
The Panthers forced the Leafs to change goalies midway through the game from Joseph Woll to Matt Murray. Their domination led to an Auston Matthews jersey being thrown on the ice and fans leaving Scotiabank Arena in droves, resulting in one of the worst playoff losses of this era in Maple Leafs hockey.
Nick Robertson ended Sergei Bobrovsky’s bid at back-to-back shutouts. Game 6 is Friday night as the Maple Leafs try to save their season.
