Home » Palm Beach Zoo to Debut New Panther Cam at Hockey Game
This Saturday, there will be something new at the Florida Panthers hockey game: the debut of a panther cam, streaming from the Palm Beach Zoo.
The zoo partnered with WPTV to present the new livestream cam, which will showcase Sassy the Florida panther, who lives at the zoo. Visitors to the zoo and news station’s website will be able to watch her in action starting the week of Dec. 2.
“This is a big win for Florida panther conservation,” Erin Ward, vice president of marketing at the zoo, said in a press release. “A partnership with both Florida Panthers Hockey and WPTV puts the importance of panther conservation and wildlife corridors in front of our entire community.”
Sassy, short for “Sassafras,” is about 8 years old and came to the Palm Beach Zoo as a cub after her mother was hit by a car. She and her two siblings survived on road kill, and she was the lone survivor. Now, she lives comfortably at the zoo, living up to her name and helping educate visitors about the plight of the Florida panther.
This Saturday’s game will be against the Carolina Hurricanes at home at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. The panther cam will be one more interactive element of attending a Florida panthers hockey game, from guests being invited to spot Stanley the panther in the crowd with binoculars, Victor E. the rat dancing on the ice, Stanley beating a drum in the stands, a fight or two, and of course, throwing rats onto the rink when the home team wins.
This year, the Florida Panthers Foundation showed its support for the zoo by awarding it a grant to share the story of the work that is being done for panther conservation. According to Florida Fish and Wildlife, there are about 120 to 230 adult panthers in the entire state. However, this is a major rebound from when there were only about 20; the animals made the endangered species list in 1967.
